do mallows spread via their root system?

i have some mallows that are becoming invasive. i think the first few arrived in bird droppings.

Um, although they have a robust root system, they mostly spread by seed. Enthusiastically.

Esh: I hadn't thought about the roots being from a tree. Hmmm. There is some sort of tree in our neighbor's yard that is next to the bed, but the funny thing is, those roots are also in the back by another clump of bamboo. Though, I did get a wild hare at one point, thinking they were willow roots. There's nothing like heading outside at 1:00 A.M. with a butcher knife to scare the neighbors! As for the ivy: it could be that, as well. It's on the other side of the house but it has crept around the other side already. The funny thing, I painted the ivy with vine-x but nothing has happened. Loolie, I wonder if you were ever able to learn more about the root system of your eucalyptus citriodora. I also have a citriodora that's about the same size as yours and am trying to find out how deep the roots might go (in terms of watering, in my case). We're in an extended drought in California, the opposite of your weather when you wrote your message more than 5 years ago. And our soils are likely to be very different, which affects root structure, from what I've read, so even though our trees are the same there could be big differences in their root structure. Nevertheless, I'd be very interested to know what you eventually found out and what happened with your tree. By the way, I didn't find your question metaphysical, per one of the replies, nor unreasonable as others seemed to imply. So, again, if by any chance you ever run across this message, I'd love to hear your update.

Ken is correct. It is almost surely voles. Chris over at Hallson's has a superb solution. Get some plastic containers (Glad lock, etc) with the snap on lids. Cut a hole in the side of the container, about 3/4 - 1 inch in diameter in one end. Place a rodent poison bait block in the container and snap on the lid. Place the baited container, opening near the ground near the holes in the dirt. The rodents will go in to eat the bait, but can't remove the entire block. Hi, For the benefit of creating a useful list... Which of these native grasses/sedges (Poales) will spread ENDLESSLY, if given the chance to do so, via roots (to form a clonal stand)? Any if it does, would the stand, theoretically, be without a life end expectancy, as long as not succeeded over? *Sedges: Carex brevior, C. cephalophora, C. crinita, C. pensylvanica (I know will), C. radiata, C. sprengelli, C. sprengelii, C. squarrosa *Spikerushes: Eleocharis acicularis (I know will), E. palustris (assume the same) *Grasses and oats: Agrostis hymemalis, A. perennans, Andropogon virginicus, Bouteloua spp., Chasmanthium latifolia, Elymus hystrix, Eragrostis spectabilis, Panicum rigidulum, Poa palustris, Schizachryium scoparium (I believe so, but maybe just forms a clump of limited span?), Sorphastrum nutans, Sporobolus heterolepis, Tridens flavus Thanks, S

it should be easy to see a rhizomatic root system sending out runners rather than a self contained root mass that shows no indication of such ..

Plants adapted to bird dispersal characteristically make some kind of a berry within which are seeds that pass through their gizzards intact. Mallows don't produce berries.

I have no explanation then as to how they arrived then. the seeds resemble millet. they have also since showed up in some beds 100ft. from this patch. a few years ago i had some unexplained turnips sprout up in my front yard. not far from the mallows. the mallows are right along the curb. maybe someone thought they'd expand my garden.

Weed seeds get around in all kinds of ways. Including wind. And if your reference to a curb in this instance indicates a streetside location then that means there is plenty of exposure to human sources of dispersal including pedestrians and gardening company trucks carrying plant parts.

Oho, seeds have a zillion ways of getting to where they need to go - from hitching a ride in animal fur (and woolly cardigans) stuck in the treads of our shoes, carried around by ants (snowdrops are notable for this), blown in on the wind, carried by river drift, moved inadvertently when transplanting...and, of course, via guerilla gardeners who think nothing of tossing a few seedbombs around.

here they are. they're not full height. I've been deadheading them to stop seed spread. this is the 3rd year. started as 6 plants. a pinched nerve has curtailed a lot of my gardening duties.

Perennial hibiscus. No point in cutting the flowers off as these are the main reason for growing the plants. And it does not look like they are encroaching on much else except weeds - why not just let them form a flowering hedge effect each summer?
