Should I plant my leucothoe cuttings now or wait until spring?

Leucothoe keiskei from cuttings exactly around a year old. They will be in about 4-5 hours of sun where I want it. If I plant it now will the winter winds and sun dehydrate it to death since roots won’t be as established? Is it best to wait until spring?

Plant in spring.

For now: prune those cuttings so you will get more bushier plants.

ya know.. does z7 even really have a winter..

does your ground freeze?? .. NO

do you even get to zero.. except int he rarest winters??? .. probably not ...

plant them.. imo ... they have longer odds in mother earth for winter.. than in your care of them in pots ...

and per above.. if you trim them... you can root those.. to plant next fall.. but then.. you are back to tending pots for winter.. lol ..

Here in zone 9 in CA, we plant EVERYTHING in the Fall! The mild wet winter is a perfect time, as you say, for plants to establish their roots, in order to take off in the Spring (our Spring bloom, bulbs, bloom on fruit trees, etc starts in Feb!. If you are really in zone 9, it is unlikely that you would have hard killer frosts? I would not use chemical fertilizers until the Spring, just good compost. Jackie

Thank you Lucy. The planting site fits your description. The nursery that is planting it said that it will be a few inches above ground level and the hole will not be much larger then the root ball. I think that sounds OK especially because the surrounding soil is pretty good and I do expect some settling because of old Cherry tree roots that are breaking down. He did mention leaving on the wire basket. I mentioned cutting back the wire in areas where roots could (down the road) become girdled. Should I have him remove the basket, or will that disturb the roots too much? Do you think I should stake it for the first year? I am not sure how much wind moves through that area. I'll check it out next windy day. Is there anything else I should be thinking about? Thank you in advance. Ally

...potting up some Nassella tenuissima, grown from seed. It's a great grass. It doesn't have to be in full sun. It can get by with light shade as well. It's best in a spot that gets some breeze, because it has such a hypnotizing movement.

Thanks everyone! I've been using Miracle Gro AV mix and perlite 50-50. I didn't realize they needed repotted so often so I'm sure my three oldest plants will really appreciate it as they've never been repotted. I did go to the shed and found one of the PVC light stands I made several years ago when I was starting a lot of seeds. I think my husband robbed a few fittings last year so hoping to pick up the missing pieces and a a couple of light fixtures tomorrow so I can get everything set up and ready.

Ground definitely freezes, not sure how deep its frozen but starting from January ground is usually solid as metal. Lowest we typically get is 5 degrees but can get lower on the rare winters as you mention. Well if I do plant them I guess I will put buckets over them whenever days get extremely cold or windy in the winter

Well as much as I considered planting in spring, I took the risk and planted it. I wanted them to get a head start. I noticed the area I wanted it which is a foundation planting didn’t have as much space as I thought and ended up having to plant them only 2 ft apart.. there is a rapid growing beautyberry on the left and a lingonberry to the right of the last one. I probably planted too close didn’t I? Better to move them in the future or now?
