FFO on Jewel of Tavares
I've waited a very long time for Jewel of Tavares to bloom, considering I got it in April of 2021. The large bloom opened well despite an overnight low of 59 degrees. It was worth the wait!

Blue Swallowtail looked a bit different in the the cooler temps.
White Ambrosia continues to rebloom.

Comments (16)Lovely photos! I ditto the kudos on BUTTER PECAN - that is a great picture of an interesting looking daylily. (And I am surprised that I feel that way, as I normally loathe and despise contrasting light colored midribs.) I have ANGELUS BLUE SKIES too - I love it when it polys, and it sometimes looks very blue-lavender to me. (The color seems to be a bit variable in my experience - perhaps the night temperatures have something to do with it. Comments (20)Thanks for the info. it is definitely on my list! I have AUTUMN JEWELS from you, Debra. It looks JUST like your picture - excellent bright color. Unfortunately, I didn't have the smarts to plant it with compatible colors. Visualize WEBSTER'S PINK WONDER behind, ON YOUR KNEES YOU WILL FIND HIM (muddy "rose red") behind and to the right, and OH WHAT A BEAUTIFUL MORNING (peach pink) next to it. Not a felicitous combo, that's for sure. I persist in plopping things in wherever I find a spot, with the best of intentions to move them to better places next time. Comments (15)Mantis - My Star of India is never purple. It's always red violet. It has been pretty dry here and that section of the garden doesn't get any supplemental watering, so the color is not as vibrant as in past years. I just got Marietta Heartbeat last fall. It overwintered just fine in a pot, which didn't get watered through most of May because I had surgery. I'm just glad it's alive and has any buds at all. It took four years, but Chilled Orange Sorbet finally took off this year. Cinderella Blue has 15-17 buds and instant rebloom. So I'm really happy with that Waldrop. Marlee Jane is doing moderately well. The only slow increaser of the ones I have is Chilled Orange Sorbet. I also added Lydia's Regal Robes in the fall, but it hasn't bloomed yet. Debra...See More

last yearlast modified: last yearBrad - No, Jewel of Tavares is not a late bloomer. It's registered as blooming EM. Seven or eight of the daylilies I got in Spring 2021 have not bloomed yet. I think the area where I had the pots did not get enough sun. They were planted last September. Then they were deprived of the usual April and May rains. So I've been watering those now and then during July and August. Jewel of Tavares is the only one of the seven to scape, although the other have grown huge, healthy fans.
Sherry - Jewel of Tavares is supposed to have a 7.5 inch bloom when established. My first bloom was 7 inches.
Nan - That big watermark was why I bought Jewel of Tavares.
Kate - I don't think my Blue Swallowtail would have rebloomed if I hadn't kept watering it in July and August.
Mantis - The bloom on White Ambrosia (about 6.5 inches here) is much larger than Ice Cream Emperor and the scapes are a lot taller. Both have pink undertones. Here, Ice Cream Emperor always has such perfectly formed blooms, I would have to say I like its flowers better. But I prefer a taller scape like White Ambrosia has. Ice Cream Emperor is often shorter than the registered 25 inches. In cool morning temps White Ambrosia does not open as well as Ice Cream Emperor, but give it some heat and it really shines.
