Design Dilemma Windows

Replace with sliding windows or new bay view window?

We are converting the living room area into a den/guest room. To qualify as a bedroom the city requires we put egress window. We are removing the drop ceiling and filling in the sunken floor which requires the bay view window to be raised. The bay view window is a retrofit and cannot be reused. Confused if we should go we sliding windows, double hung windows or replace with new bay view window that alone with cost about $2500. I saw these boxes windows and considering this as well. See pictures. The opening is 9’8” x 4’8”. Any ideas or suggestions on what to do. I like to have that seating space and hate to give it up. Thanks.

What is thee outside look like? You would ideally try and match the other windows to make it look right and not a bastardization.

This window faces the backyard and we are putting bi food door on one side and other side is the patio sliding door for the master bedroom. This is the only window that we have facing backyard.

A new construction window does not always mean more glass. It depends on window type and size and manufacturer. When we replaced our old leaky Aluminum windows with AL clad, wood interior windows (Marvin Ultimate), we ended up losing about 6+ inches of glass. The old aluminum had skinny sash while the new ones have large wood pieces inside. The large wood pieces did not affect the views as we feared but they certainly did not yield more glass. There are several reasons to stay with replacement even when changing siding and trim. We lived through this in our previous house. When trim around the windows is expensive to replace and already matches the house trim. WHen original frame is sound and we are not changing window size. When replacement window is sufficiently better than old window. When project cost of new construction is way higher than replacement windows. WE ended up using replacement windows for our previous home. For our current house, the trim was bad and needed replacement anyway, the framing surrounding the windows had visible water damage and there is no replacement for those poor quality Aluminum windows. The end result was new construction windows.

What is above and below the bay, or is it self contained in a single opening? i.e. roof above, skirt below. How much siding above and below that might need to be replaced is a consideration. Attach some pics, it might help the next answers be more clear in providing a direction for you. Bays add space, space is nice, and views in multiple directions, so what you see out the window is important to consider too. I think you want to aim for symmetry, if possible. Three evenly spaced windows.

Thanks Trace! We do have a living room. I didn’t share the full layout of how the remodeled area would look. We are removing walls and will have enough space for a living room in the area next to where the current one is and instead will convert this area into a bedroom.

IMO post the new plan . Maybe the guest would like a door to the outside. Then oyu just replace that bay with a sliding patio door or french doos which ever works with the exterior . I also love the box window look but really we need to see the xterior of the house and aflooor plan of thenew and old spaces together.

Yep that’s what we plan to do. We have a convertible sofa bed and plan to put it in this room 🙂
