Ok to remove 2 Aucubas?

I am in PNW zone 8, SW WA, Vancouver (across the Columbia River from Portland OR). I have 3 Aucubas planted @ 8 years ago on north side of my house which are too large & requiring too much pruning to keep to size. Several times this summer I’ve thinned to reduce height, each time cutting lower into the plants. of course they get thicker since each cut at a joint produces three new stems. I also prune away from house so I can easily stand behind them. I just decided that I want to take the one at each end out & leave the middle plant. The middle of this stretch is just siding, and that middle plant has the best color with many yellow leaves bordered in green instead of just yellow spots. This will give me a place for a more interesting shade bed to fill with more neat ferns etc. & make a walk along the path there more interesting. I also want to reduce my pruning chores.

My question is about the lone Aucuba left in the middle - any issues I should think about? I wouldn’t do any cutting to shape it until next spring so I know it will look bare on its sides & be in a pretty awful shape until then. But, it should survive the winter since its so well established, do you agree?

i dont think you have any concern.. other than it will take a year or two to grow out to hide where the other plants were ...

winter should not be an issue ...

i would cut them flush to the ground.. and use a stump killer on the cut trunk ... i might be concerned.. if you go dig out the two removed plants.. in that you might be significantly impacting the roots of the one left ...

besides.. do you really need to plant something in the exact same spots???

if you insist on digging.. maybe dig one side out this year.. let those roots recover.. and then dig the other side out next year ...i dont know ... or its much to do about nothing ....

@ken_adrian Adrian MI cold Z5 Ken, thanks very much for your input. It’s just what I need to proceed with my project! I have the patience for the surviving Aucuba to fill out its shape. My husband likes your plan for disposing of the stumps! I can manage the cutting down just fine but those trunk bases look pretty sturdy. I was thinking they do need to come out or the plant will grow back. There is a main drip line hose feeding the individual drip hoses in that stretch & I don’t think it’s gotten buried over the years but I hadn't thought about the roots of the one I want to keep so thanks for that point . I will dig carefully & maybe dig only on the extreme outsides to asses root situation. Plants are @4” apart. I won’t plant exactly in same space. The bed is 5+” wide most of its length. The top end up by fence in second pic is planted with a hardy fuchsia, tassel ferns, maidenhair ferns, Hosta, hellebore, etc. My plan is to add more of the same shade lovers to replace both Aucubas with the middle one remaining providing some height & yeloow color for contrast. Fun project! The other side of this path receives a lot of south & west sun since my one story house doesn’t shade that side. Perfect time of year here to be outside digging things up.

Sure, start hardening them off in a porch. Most annual seedlings can be placed in direct sun right from germination, but you should avoid this if they are under plastic or in an enclosed space without ventilation. They will grow much better in the sun than not. Start off with just an hour or two of morning sun if they have been under lights, then increase it after a few days. A porch attached to the house should be fine at night. The trick is to change conditions slowly, allow the plants a few days to get used to each change. They are perfectly capable of living outside in the conditions you describe, they just need to get used to it. The idea of peat pots is that you just drop the whole pot in the ground and the roots grow straight through it. I've tried it and it didn't work, so I'd recommend removing the pot. Cosmos love a free root run through loose soil.

you call you 2 to 3 footers small .. i started with 6 inches.. on bare sand ... with drip irrigation ... 14 years later ... they are all over 20 feet ... [note: no mulch with drip] you kinda left out the drip irrigation info ... you CAN figure out a schedule ... my point is.. no one else can figure it out for you ... with my drip ... i would water.. until it is moist.. at least 6 inches down ... run the water ... dig a hole under an emitter ... run it more.. dig another hole .... etc ... FIGURE IT OUT .... [actually.. in my hosta beds.. i ran it.. until a hole dug between two emitters .. was damp at depth ...] again.. with my system.. on my soil ... i found .... that if i ran the drip for 6 to 8 hours ... in my sand.. i could get the sand moist to the root depth ... dont ever forget.. its all about getting water to the roots ... not the soil surface ... and we really dont care.. if the surface gets dry ... keep digging holes .... [if it need be said.. dig hole not where trees are ... you should have plenty of drippers in between plants ... remove grass.. dig down.. make discovery ... replace soil.. put grass plug back in ...] and barring drought.. or extreme heat... i might only water every 7 to 10 days... because it simply doenst dry.. AT DEPTH ... all that fast.. subject to your soil ... and once you figure it out.. you can quit digging holes ... the grass is irrelevant... with the drippers.. so make your own decision in that regard ... and for those of you who dont knwo about engineered drippers... they may only put out 1/4 gal per hour ... so even thought the hours might sound extreme ... usage usually isnt ... also... very little is lost to evaporation ... as you arent making it airborne to begin with ... so dont go all horrified on these numbers ... good luck .. sound like that guy you are relying on.. is brilliant.. if i may say so myself... lol ken ps: also.. getting it moist in the first place.. may take more hours.. than maintaining it ....

tlbean, your goal while a plant is rooting is to reduce the surface area of evapotranspiration. It is always recommended to eliminate some of the leaves and to cut larger leaves in half. Many novices make the cuttings too long, as well. That makes it hard on a plant. Next time, eliminate the rooting in water step and root your cuttings directly in the potting medium.

Eric, you're doing great. There are no rules, just guidelines. All our environments are different...different seeds/plants have various needs. Your list is near complete. Might want to add a small fan. Starting a tray early is never a bad thing. Spread out the chore. Having a back-up tray for insurance incase something goes wrong. etc. Bottom watering only when seedlings are drying out and your pots feel light. Start at least 4 times the seed you intend to grow out. Seeds are cheap. Pot up the strongest seedlings and cull (clip) the weak. That will give you twice what you need. Take pics of your progress so you have a timeline to learn from and troubleshoot. I always encourage anyone to go ahead and get started if even a month early. You will learn from it and can post pics if in trouble. Then start another round a few weeks later. I grow year round so none of this applies to my methods. Some varieties of tomatoes I started in January as well as peppers and eggplant. 75 varieties of herbs, salads, kales, chard, beets, radish, etc. I started last weekend. 50 or so to go. I'll repeat that in a couple weeks for a succession of plantings. The dozen tomatoes will be in one and two gallon grow bags producing early fruit about the time my indeterminates go in the ground. (dwarf. micros and a hybrid cascading variety) I no longer bother with raising and lowering my light banks. I raise young seedling trays with boxes. I have a dozen 2-6 inch tall cardboard boxes I stack to get those trays up high. They can share a light with a tray of 6-8 inch larger seedlings.

@ken_adrian Adrian MI cold Z5 Here’s the results of today’s work - less than 2 hours o cut into small pieces for our yard waste bin. Now the fun begins with those trunk stubs! My husband said he’ll do very careful cutting & digging straight down on the remaining plant sides of stubs. He plans to dig on an open side first to see how serious of a root situation exists. The 3rd pic is of the remaining plant - it doesn’t look too bad all by its lonely, does it?
