What's happening to my plum tree and bark damage
Comments (7)Thanks everyone. We haven't fertilized the trees yet. We're new to gardening and fruit trees and wanted to be organic. I just read something about organic gardeners and how they believe they shouldn't fertilize, but in fact we should. Kind of a "doh" moment. Sometimes you feel it's just something else you have to figure out. Any suggestions? Can you use all purpose ferts i use in the garden, 4-5-6 fox farm? Since I have it know it's probably better to use than waiting. Milehigh- thanks for the info on the tree wrap. Sounds a lot better than painting. Warranty? I didn't know trees came with warranties! I've emailed the nursery and included photos but haven't heard back from them....See MoreBark on Peach Tree Eaten
Comments (8)No, what Rhizo said was that it MAY not be able to survive to the next spring, but that until it actually dies, no-one can say for sure. IF the tree was totally girdled, BUT the sapwood survived, and IF the tree is able to grow over the chewed up area sufficiently that the sap can make it down to the roots, then the tree will probably live. IF the tree was too badly damaged, then it will ptobably die. If you can get either your county's extension agent or a certified arborist to come look at it, you might get a more definitive opinion, since they can see the damage. MAYBE, if you can post several photos of the damage, a more informed opinion can be given here, but maybe not as well. Seeing the sapwood, and the true extent of the damage can help, but trees, as with all natural things, vary so much in what they can and cannot survive - some make it through an injury and thrive, while another gets what looks like the same damage, and dies from it. There are some things that are clear-cut and others that are ambiguous. This seems to be one of the ambiguous ones....See MoreHalf eaten Navel Orange tree leaves.
Comments (7)norwood, just so you know.....soap sprays only work if you actually get the spray on the critter. Once it dries, or the insect isn't drenched in it, it's useless. Be very careful about using dish detergents for pest problems as they can be very caustic on tender foliage. Dawn has a terrible reputation for causing severe damage, more so than most. Believe it or not, commercial insecticidal soaps are less damaging to leaves, while being more effective for pest control. ANYhow! The leaf chewing on your plant looks like the damage caused by leaf cutter bees. Do all the leaves look sort of like half circles neatly cut away?...See MoreOrange tree with bark disease
