Design Dilemma Home Decorating Flooring

Hi everyone! We just bought a new house and are planning on replacing the flooring. We are okay with the kitchen and bathrooms for now, so we are trying to find a flooring color that goes with the cabinets that doesn’t clash. Any suggestions? We will do the entirety of the house in the same flooring. We are thinking vinyl.

If the kitchen is not being done now just make sure what ever flooring you get you buy enough for the whole kitchen and add 10 % since almost every finished flooring has a shelf life for colors .IMO you get flooring you love unless of course you love the cabinets and I can bet in a very short time you will want to redo that kitchen so for me get flooring you like everywhere else and plan a kitchen remodel in a few months/

I would do a pale neutral oak in the light tan/sand range. Not gray. Your cabinets are warm-toned, so I would stay with warm-toned floors.

The neutral pale tan color will give you enough contrast with the cabinets to where it seems intentional, and will be so much easier to keep nice looking than dark floors.

Edited to add: I rather like your cabinets. They look like "keepers" from an aesthetic viewpoint, to me.

I was wondering if this is due to our foundation cracking. One way or the other, it's due to movement in the structure not being isolated enough from the tile floor. If your foundation is cracking, I'd say your tile floor is the least of your worries. But yes, it could cause the tile and/ or grout to crack. It could also be one of several more subtle causes, such as not putting any thinset under the backerboard when installing it, using the wrong thinset, etc., etc., etc.. Is this a sign of more cracks to come? Should this be repaired and if so how does one repair this? It may or may not be. It would take a physical inspection to determine for certain exactly what's causing the movement. That would also be required to repair it, because before you repair the crack you need to determine what's causing it, or else it'll just keep coming back. Our contractor added another layer of grout. Did the second layer of grout permanently bond with the first layer? That depends. How long after the original installation did he add the second layer of grout, and approximately how deep were the joints prior to the second layer?

So i had an HVAC guy take a look and here is how it explained it to me... please let me know if this makes sense: The thermostats are so old, there was no system in place to tell the system "hey its below 35 degrees, use oil for heat".. so putting the system in emergency mode is what tells the boiler to generate the heat. He said the current owner isn't using the system correctly, as it sounds like he just puts it on emergency and uses oil heat all winter. For example this past winter was rather mild except for the two storms.. the heat pump should have been used for most of the winter saving oil cost. Does all of that make sense? Obviously I'd like to update the thermostats and I probably need some sort of ourdoor sensor. I've seen that honeywell sells a good system with outdoor sensor, is this the best way to go? Is there a recommended model so I can upgrade and use the system as I should? Thanks guys, this is all a learning experience for me!

No, you don't need the same species of wood. Oak floors are used in just about every configuration of home with every possible wood and color door. And with darker stains, the species becomes less identifiable. I tried finding pix of what you are describing and nearly every picture I could find of dark interior doors was shown with a fairly light floor. So then I looked for dark wood floors and all the pix I could find with darker floors showed all painted doors. Granted, I didn't spend a lot of time, but try to find some inspiration photos of the look you're after and you may get more feedback here.

The island is large enough to have a good zone of safety around the cooking zone, but not large enough to serve as the prep zone. Your prep zone in this layout will be the corner between your fridge and DW. And that would be fine for many people. If you want to prep and socialize with visitors at the same time, then this isn't a layout that will work for that and you'd need to move the cooking zone off of the island and put a sink there so that you'd prep facing out into the room. Whatever you decide, I'd make the entry to the pantry in the hall adjacent so that you could extend the cabinets down all the way to that hall and move the fridge down further to make access easier from the great room. That will also give you a good place for a MW next to the fridge. I'd personally also prefer a peninsula for some separation between the kitchen and dining room while still remaining open for the connection. I'd also prefer the cooking zone to be off of the island so that it would b easier and cheaper (and more effectively) vented to the exterior straight through the wall. Flank it with some windows to make it a focal point from the great room.

Visit Cortec LVP online…lots of looks ..easy install and holds up to all kind of traffic…we have had it 20 years…still looks perfect and still love it…pretty much indestructible…but i wouldn’t necessarily decide based on the cabinets you have now as you may change them if you are updating them in the future…this was our choice…if you cant find a showroom…get-a sample as the texture and graining is very impressive
