Whole house water filtration?

Our mountain cabin is on a community well system. Last summer they dug a new well for our section. Ever since then we have had terrible calcium or something on everything. A white film on the sinks and spotting on dishes for example. Does anyone have a whole house system? i have a guy coming next week to give me a quote, just have no idea what to look for or avoid. I dont want super soft water, but is that the solution?

You DO want soft water. That lime build-up is all in your pipes, too. A water softener will take care of that problem.

I’m not opposed to soft water per se, but I have been in homes with a water softener and washing hair or rinsing dishes was ridiculous. Maybe the newer models let you adjust the levels?

Where is says nn it represents none noted. it might be hard to read but note the first number is the result, the 2nd is national standard and the last number In each row is the min. detected level. Test results where contamination was detected at or above the min. detection level , but not above the national standard. I will investigate tomorrow when I go to the property if particles develop after leaving out a cup of water for a while and I will let you know. pls let me know what you think regarding results. btw I did not include any results that tested fine. thanks in advance!

We just installed a whole house filter for a specific problem coming from our well...a sulfur odor. The filter also removes iron. It is called a clear choice filter and was installed by ClearWater systems (no, I have no connection or interest in the company). We are now absolutely ecstatic with our water quality which for the first time has no odor and tastes good. We still plan on keeping our spring water delivery until we eventually get reverse osmosis for drinking water, but the odor from the house water had bothered us a bit when showering or brushing teeth. The odor/iron filter was placed upstream of our softener. Good luck! Soto.

I recall that there is an issue with watering some plants with softened water due to salt content, but since I haven't had to deal with this, I only raise the point as something to be checked out.

You want to test your water before you do anything, and ask for a copy of the report. We are on a farm, and water a big garden as well as water livestock and drink it ourselves. Whoever is coming out should be a total enthusiast geek about wells and water, if not, send him on his way.

How can you get a filtration system without knowing what is in your water that needs to be filtered out? Did they not test the water after the new well was done? Also if you do end up needing a water softener I would think you would want to make sure that your outside hose spickets are not connected to the system.

We have a water filtration system that doesn't rely on salt. I'll ask my DH tomorrow.

And yes, you need to get the water tested before you do anything.

Way back when I was shopping, there was one well-known company that leased water treatment machines. Turns out that was way expensive compared to buying a softener. If the company you're talking to only does leasing/renting, move on to another company.

We've had whole house softeners in every house we've owned. Our soft water is great. I've never found washing my hair or anything else to be ridiculous. Could be you're not used to soft water so it seems different. Definitely must have the water tested to see what you're dealing with and as someone else mentioned the outside spigots bypass the softener. At our house in the city the kitchen cold water doesn't go through the softener. I guess the idea is that you have unsoftened drinking water. Our lake house doesn't bypass the kitchen cold and that's what I prefer. Otherwise you still have mineral deposits around the sink, coffee maker, etc.

There is no reason not to run all the water water through the softener. Even my barn water goes through the softener. The water is NOT salty. The water is excellent to drink for people and animals and plants.
