Design Dilemma Paint

Simply White walls & Chantilly Lace ceiling/trim?

Hi Houzz,

Looking for feedback/critiques on this combo of colors and sheens.

Walls - BM Simply White in eggshell
Ceiling - BM Chantilly Lace in matte
Trim - BM Chantilly Lace in satin (personally not a fan of semigloss)
Interior Doors - color TBD. Does this sheen match the trim?

The area:

Recently renovated open concept space with new drywall and trim.
White oak floors and kitchen cabinets, kitchen island painted in Chantilly Lace.
Good natural lighting surrounded by a wooded area.
Not a household of children/pets.

I rarely mix whites I find using the same color in different sheens amuch better way to handle all white spaces .I like matte on walls and ceilings and either satin or semi gloss on trim I even sometimes use high gloss on trim if the space is quite contemporary . I need to see the doors and also some claue as to your style of kitchen.IMO Simply white has a yellow undertone so I would never mix those together and you need to be very careful with lighting too. All LED 4000K for sure or any will take on a yellow cast .

I wouldn't put those two colors together either. Since you already have Chantilly Lace kitchen cabinets you should go with that color. For me that would be way too much white, so if that is what's making you hesitate and gravitate toward a warmer white for the walls, look at other off whites for the wall color such as Silver Satin, White Wisp or Paper White. Warm colors don't really go with Chantilly Lace. If you use all Chantilly Lace, the different sheens will cause the color to look slightly different on the walls as compared to the trim so maybe that will be enough difference for you. Sample before paying someone else to paint so you're sure and you don't waste your money. Or if you do it yourself you will be wasting your own time.

Your bedrooms and bathrooms are opportunities to use other colors if you don't want all white. It is usually best to carry the same trim color throughout a house, but I have cheated on that if there is a doorway (with a door that closes, not just an opening) between rooms. In that case the average person won't notice if the trim colors are different.

I may be replying to an old post...having a white dilemma! Moving to a new home soon, and I need to choose a white for the painter soon! I used BM Cotton Balls in my current home in 2 bedrooms, one is north facing and the other is south facing. worked well...nice and bright but not stark, however the hallway to the rooms look beige, which I am not fond of. New home has both north and south exposures + a hallway without a lot of light. Considering Simply White. Second question...the baseboards are lovely and very high, I would like them to remain a feature, which white to choose for trim? Your comments are appreciated!!!

Mixing a chantilly lace white vanity with simply white in bathroom?

At the last minute I switched the paint on the vanity to chantilly white because I read that it goes well with marble ( which is the vanity stone) but....I realized too late that it meant that the whole master bedroom would need to go to chantilly lace because the bathroom door is visible in the room and I think all the doors and trim need to match. Will it look odd if I leave the vanity chantilly lace and just paint everything else in simply white? I sampled both and I think I need the warmth of simply white since the room faces north and east.

Ok this post has made my decision final. I’m going to paint all my walls/trim decorators white. I like that it leans slightly grey and that there are absolutely no creamy undertones. I’m going to do the walls in eggshell finish and the trim in semi gloss. My floors are a whitewashed oak and my cabinets are a mix of painted white and wood stained. Will post pics in a couple of weeks when it’s complete to hopefully help others!

I am adding to an old thread here but I have a similar dilemma... I am painting my new bedroom walls silver chain /harbor gray.. I was going to use simply white on ceiling and trim but I questioned the lack of brightness in simply white on my ceiling .. I have northern and eastern light and some southern but it doesn’t make it in due to a farmers porch. I was advised due to this I might want to try Chantilly lace on the ceiling and that simply white trim could work but it’s doesn’t seem so ? Maybe the gray is causing my dilemma .. i am used to working with two colors not three... I also have vaulted ceilings and a tray... on top of it I need to come up with a complimentary color for master bath.. or stay the with the same ?Any help would be MUCH appreciated!

Thank you both for the feedback.

We’re still mid-reno so unfortunately the 4000k recessed lights are not yet installed to see how these different sample colors would look under light, but we could maybe test them in another area of the house.

Chantilly lace is nice, but too sterile I think for the whole house. I’ll pick up some samples of the other suggested colors and see which ones work better than Simply White.

Chantilly, is more sterile than simply white. I wouldnt mix them. If you like simply white, use it for everything. Ceilings, flat white (or possibly matte). Walls, eggshell, or matte, and trim, either satin or semi gloss. I prefer flat over matte for a ceiling.
