I love looking at these conversions. To be honest many are bigger than DD’s city co-op.

I like looking at tiny homes, but don't understand how anyone would want lift bed that you can't stand upright in.

At least school buses are one level and you can stand up.

I don't think I've ever seen a washer under the bed.

I've never fully understood and certainly never shared an interest or any attraction some find in projects for vehicles like this. Do people do it to take pictures of it and put it on the internet? I'd never want to travel or even spend a night in something like this, much less build one.

I’m not sure what this couple is planning to do with their converted bus. Maybe travel part-time or maybe live in it full-time. It looks great!

I’ve been following a travel site about a young couple who has converted a Mercedes Sprinter van into their home that they travel in. Last year, they travelled around the USA to many State and National Parks. This year they have been on a trip starting in California in May and travelling to Alaska.

It is definitely not for everyone (probably most people) but it is certainly the right thing for this couple. They have been to and stayed in very beautiful, out of the way places. They try to eat at local restaurants as much as possible.

Right now, they are at Kenai Fjords National Parks hiking the glaciers.

I like it but wonder if there are steps to the bed. getting up in the night would be risky. That bus will be cold at night I once spent the night in a caboose. it was cold with no insulation or window coverings, but fun. Even motor homes can be cold.

They’re fairly young people so I don’t think they’d have a problem with climbing steps. They’ve travelled to 137 cities in it.

I see they have a wood/pellet stove and perhaps other sources of heat.

It’s amazing what can be put into these conversions now.

Jasdip, they probably do have a compost toilet. Or maybe a water flush one.

They would have holding tanks for their waste water that can be dumped at proper facilities. They probably regularly stay at sites with hookups that have power, water and sewers even though they’d be fine for a while with no hookups at all.

There are many reasons people decide to go tiny, whether reducing debt, carbon footprint, love of travel etc.

I do agree with your sentiment for us older folk. Although they sometimes show retirees climbing ladders up to those loft spaces, for the most part this lifestyle is for the younger population.

One blogger gave a realistic evaluation on tiny home living. For her it made sense to rent a special occasion dress because she had such limited storage.

Many being to local gyms so they don't waste their water supply.

Certainly not for everyone, but I enjoy seeing how these tiny spaces are created.

Again many tiny homes are much larger than both my DD’s city co-ops.

Would it be cheaper to just buy a used RV?

I don’t think there really is much difference in cost how one travels. You can make any type of travel as cheap or as pricy as you want.

When Covid happened and travel plans were kiboshed, my husband, who is a pretty proactive guy, came up with the bright idea that we were going to keep on travelling even though many hotels were closed. He had a custom fibreglass trailer built so that we could still go on golfing vacations. I humoured him.

Well, it has been a hoot! Even though we can now book into hotels, and often do, we often take the trailer out for a couple of days. We’ll be back to airplane and train travel pretty soon but I think we will still take the trailer out every so often. It’s tiny but has a full size bed and proper mattress, AC, heating, solar panels, bathroom, microwave, stove and fridge and is really a lot of fun (for a few days at a time).

A company in British Columbia built it for us and sent us photos of the progress.

My daughter and son-in-law use it year round for little getaways and probably still will even though travelling is getting back to normal.

But you just turn your nose down on it as something that's beneath you and reserved only for us 'country bumpkins'.

I neither turned my nose down nor made a disparaging comment about anyone anywhere. I said I didn't myself understand the attraction some have for such items and I wondered what the appeal is. And, that they don't appeal to me.

roxsol, your hubby wasn't the only one with the same idea. We bought a camp up north in the summer of 2020 to get away from the restrictions, close to a large state park and recreational area. We would leave camp to come home on Fridays for the weekend. There would be a parade of everything from large winnebagos to small pop-ups campers heading north every weekend, even in the winter. Still is, but the parade has reduced some in size.

I definitely can see the attraction. You have your own little comfortable home on wheels. If you want to sit outside and watch TV yiu , if you want to make some eggs at 3 AM you can, if you want a comfortable chair you got it. Your not restricted to a square box in a hotel. Everything you need is right in your own little home.

I was probably the last person you would expect to find in a little camper and my husband even more so. We love holidays where you get to see what other places have to offer, nice hotels, really good food. I love big cities but love the wilderness too. That’s why we live where we do. But we really like our golf!

I was amused when my husband started looking at these little campers and thought it would pass. It didn’t. Next thing I knew I was being asked to pick out flooring, upholstery colour and countertops. These campers are not the campers from 30 years ago!

Our first outing was in May 2021 and LOL it snowed a foot of snow but it was so much fun. We put on the furnace, put on some good music and played cards.

I live in a very rural area so I really don’t need to get out into nature but dang, the places we have gone in this little camper have been wonderful! We rarely go where there are hookups or other people and it worked perfectly for golfing excursions.

The other great thing, it is very small and can be pulled by a medium sized SUV. I’d never give up hotel/oversea holidays but this little camper helped make the Covid business easier to deal with. You know, when life hands you lemons, make lemonade.

We’ve done a couple of trips in it this year and have had so much fun.

Right now, my husband is planning a winter getaway. This will be our first airplane flight holiday since January 2020. I’m looking forward to that.🙂

For us, taking a "trip" with the family dog was about on a par with taking every vacation trip with kids. Even with our dogs who have always been well behaved and flexible, their needs set each day's schedules. Over our decades worth of 350-450 mile car trips to SoCal to visit family and friends and for vacations, the family dog usually spent the time at a boarding facility near where we lived. Whether the trips were with or not with children. We took other car trips from time to time, even weekend getaways, and outside of settings where we could bring our dogs with us (visits to friends and family), we never considered taking the dogs along. Being restricted to hotels that took pets was an issue too. Nope, no thanks.

Their visits to the well run boarding facilities were like fun summer camp trips for them and our trips without them gave us a break too. And yes, we took annual or more frequent vacation trips with our kids and always made sure to take at least one a year without them.

Roxsol, at some point can you show us the inside? Nice that your DD is using it too.

I went with very neutral choices (boring) 🙂 choices but doll it up with pillows and bedding when we take it out. As you can see it is very tiny but perfect for 2 people and one dog. One end has a permanant full size bed and the other end a table.

My husband loves the night sky (me too) and when there is something special happening, especially low on the horizon, we will go out into the middle of nowhere and spend the night. We have a very dark night sky at home and can see things that are happening in the high sky but we are surrounded by heavy trees and the low horizons are not visible.

We’ll spend the night drinking a good bottle of wine and chatting. Well, not wine, as neither of us care for it but something good.

Eld, it has worked out well for them. They own a house in the city but also have a quarter section of land about an hour away. They’ve started building on the property but there is not a house there yet. They like to spend the odd weekend there and take the trailer.

These bus conversions have been around for decades. I think it's what started the "Tiny House" craze of last decade. To each their own!!!

I totally get the appeal, although I might trade the size of a school bus for the comfort of driving a van. My dreams would lean more towards water than land, but same idea.

My cousin's kid bought a Transit van, customized it himself, and has been criss-crossing the country with his girlfriend and dog for over a year now. Yes they do take pictures and blog, but I'm sure mostly they're doing it for their own experience. I don't think I'd want to be in such cramped conditions long term like that, but plans with a defined end, sure.

eld, funny story! Last night while I was chatting here and my husband was busy looking up possible winter vacations, he booked a small trip for the two of us to Montreal in a couple of weeks. 💕 We’re still looking at where we will go in January.

@Elmer J Fudd...I appreciate fine art....and this looks like a masterpiece. I used to do home remodels. I see what's gone into this bus. I'm admiring it and the thrill of using it....from afar. Also, in order to get some of our camera shots, we tent camp....to get to the top of a mountain....at 1am. This bus is pure luxury!

Summersrhythm, some folks do renovate RVs. There is a couple that I have been watching for about a year now. They were travelling in a renovated RV, Covid hit so they parked the RV, bought a chunk of land in Nova Scotia and now live in a geodesic dome while they build a house. We are also RVers too. We have a small 17’ toy hauler, had a bigger travel trailer and a class C in the past. Camping is fun for sure. We always have 2 or 3 small motorcycles or scooters, a couple kayaks and 2 or 3 bicycles with us on camping trips.

Some of the college kids are living in RV's or converted schoolbuses to reduce the cost of living while in college. I saw a picture of one the other day. It looked pretty nice. It's no smaller than the space you have living in a dorm. You don't have to share with roommates.
