My brand new computer is no faster than my old one, now what?
Comments (23)thanks, we live on a busy county lake road which is paved, i believe the lines are buried. i know like i said that on the other side of the road they get cable, and our neighbors who live just east of us get it as well, so we are borderline on it all, although i have to say i don't know of anyone who has cable internet, just the tv service ut i could be wrong. Our provider is just a very small town company who sells computers and internet service, phones and phone service, and DirecTv so it isn't a large company that anyone would recognize the name or anything. My mom only lives 15 miles from me and she gets comcast so i need to check on that. i did check on satellite internet last night and didn't think the speed or price was any better than what i have now, and we have issues here with our satellite signal going out in bad weather even though it says it has 99.9 % strength. I have also checked with alltel and verizon in the past, and although their upload speeds sound impressive, the people i know who have their service hate it and have a lot of outages. So basically i just need to call Monday and see what my options are i guess. I appreciate all the advice and help. I am spending my day today researching routers and trying to figure our which one i should get and i am wondering if the transmission speeds noted on these have anything to do with how it will affect my internet speed. i am so tired of reading reviews and specs and need to just make a decision already because i have already spent way too much time on this, but there definitely does not seem to be one that has all good reviews, i just do not want to get something that will slow me down even worse if there is such a thing....See Morewhat brand computer should I buy?
Comments (29)I don't know what went out. You would think that since so many folks had that kind of a problem that they would have come up with a fix for it. I guess they fixed it in the newer models. Thanks Owbist for all your help. I'll check out the link. I was reading another posting related to the Windows mail and it sounds like it isn't too popular. I may check out Thunderbird. I have called on the HP support quite a bit recently. Didn't have any major issues with them except for not being able to get the chat-support to work and them saying there wasn't anything wrong with the site. Comments (17)I am going out of what's left of my mind... Rechecked the connections all is OK on that front. Tried to install drivers from miniCD that came with enclosure, but they were for Windows 98 only. Light does come on for enclosure when powered up. My computer sees a USB mass storage unit attached as it tells me this device would run better with a USB 2.00 port.(I have l.0, I guess) Device Mgr.says this device is there and working properly but it will not show up on "My Computer" to be accessed. I even went into DOS prompt and at random typed in various drive letters and after G:(CDRW) nothing clicked in..and I got up to the letter R:!! Just got bright idea...I am going to Nexstar website for clues...thanks for your input...keep it coming...bye for now....See MoreOld computer died -now have to use Windows 8
Comments (17)Last night I discovered that I cannot play DVDs with the home edition of Windows 8 - at least not without third party software. I installed VLC, and it will play the DVDs, but without sound. I never learned how to use Windows Media Center, and so I have always used other media players, but they will not work as well with 8. I installed Media Player Classic (my favorite from before), but it will not play DVDs, and it will now only play a few of the FLV files that I have. The ones that will not play on MPC will play on WinAmp, but I would prefer to have one player that would do everything. I guess I'll have to go back to watching DVDs on the TV with a DVD or BluRay player. Or I will try to find an inexpensive way to upgrade to Windows 8 Pro. I wish I had been given that option from the beginning. The reason that a DVD player is not included with Windows 8 is that MS expects DVDs to become obsolete in the near future, but Kevin and I both do not believe that to be the case. Kevin should know since he is in DVD sales at Sony, and while sales have already peaked, they are still steady and are a huge business. People still have vinyl records, and so I think DVDs should be expected to be around for a while. Apple removed the DVD drive from their notebooks long ago, and that is another reason I won't buy their products. I'll give you another update when I get this problem resolved.
