Low voltage transformer keeps tripping

Hello all, I installed an outdoor lighting system a few years ago and initially it worked worked. I have a 120 watt 12 volt transformer with a single tap. There are 2 (16 gauge) wire runs, 1 short run with 1 (7) watt LED fixture. The other is about 100 ft with 7 (7) watt fixtures. I know i used the standard wattage chart for calculating the proper wattage. The transformer started to trip after initially working for a variable amount of time but recently started to trip immediately after being turned on. With the load signal lighting up before it turns off. I tested the voltage in/out of the transformer which check out good. I removed one run (short) and the load signal lit up and started blinking while the lights are on. So I think that line is overloaded. im looking for some ideals that can fix this the easiest way. i plan on checking some connections and voltage on that run soon then either buy a new transformer with either multiple taps or higher wattage or both. Any input is welcome.

Do you mean you think you are overloading the 120watts, with only 49 being drawn? or are you saying its 120 converted down to 12v, (if so we already knew that part lol) what is the max load of the transformer? Have you dug up the line? could be a nick in a wire. your losing voltage and the gauge of wire is too much for the long run, rerun with 10/2 wire while you are at it. if there are 2 runs you already have a multi tap transformer, but I do not think 49 watts is overloading anything. check your line.

They somehow gravitate to all electronics. I have regular current wired out to the garden to plug stuff into like fountain, and they have ruined at least three thingamagiggies (my husband fixes them, so I don't know what they are called). I have applied vaseline to the base and around the outlets. They even go into the outlets!!! I wish I could figure out a solution to this too! Anyone out there? Pauline

Dimmer experts: line voltage load on low-voltage dimmer?

Lutron says it is OK to mix some incandescent line voltage with electronic low voltage when using one of their electronic low voltage dimmers. At least one other company doesn't recommend it as it can cause problems. Dimming electronic transformers can be an experimental process. It is not always straightforward. Do remember that you will need a neutral wire for the electronic low voltage dimmer. Note: Do not mix electronic and magnetic transformers on a dimmer.

more than likely the circuit breaker for the transformer is going bad. You can check the transformer or its circuit breaker by just hooking up lights that would simulate the ones that are connected to the buried wires and see if it trips, just count the watts that are in the bulbs with the buried wire, and connect that amount of watts/bulbs to the xfmr---you could use like a 50 watt bulb to take the place of 2.5 20 watt bulbs. Of course be careful as those bulbs will be hot!!! Gary

Most low voltage recessed lights (LED included) will not supply enough lighting, unless you have quite a number (eg - 1 per ft or more). Assuming an entire LV setup with 1 or more transformers You will need to calculate the number of lights needed, the length of low voltage wiring, wire gauge, number of transformers. DC voltage lines suffer more voltage drop than AC lines. That's also the main reason why line voltage is AC. If you're using halogen lights, the wires need to be fairly thick due to the amount of current drawn. The above configuration is highly impractical. There are LV recessed lights that have the transformer built into each fixture. (3" - 4") http://www.pegasuslighting.com/4inch-12v-recessed-lighting-housing-remodel-75w.html. There is a danger that the light fixture itself could fall if fastened to ceiling tile. However, if the drop ceiling is standard sheetrock that is properly supported and fastened, you will not have a problem. Some alternatives - T8 fluorescent lighting or LED ceiling tiles.
