I’m in the Atlanta, GA area and need help with landscaping ideas for my front yard. I’d like to incorporate hydrangeas in the front and hostas around the oak trees. We have a new walkway that was just installed, that I hope is visible from the picture. Any other help? Thank you

How much sun does that area receive and is it morning or afternoon sun? How wide is the bed between the house & walkway? Would you consider removing the small tree that isn't quite centered between the windows?

Hi! It does get morning sun. Afternoon sun is pretty shaded if at all. The tree is actually centered but I took the picture at an angle so it doesn’t look like it. It’s really pretty when blooming. Everything else can go.

It's not the kind of porch that is conducive to having a lot of planting in front of it. It needs a broad landing itself and a nice wide walk to it. The walk should stay at least 6' away, min,, from the house in order to leave sufficient room for foundation plantings. "Dark grey with white trim" sounds harsh to me.I like house colors in the medium grey/taupe range with white trim. They can have a tint of color so long as it is not too powerful. The fourth example down is nearly a reversal with the body being the light color and the trim darker, but I think it works well, the house being light grey, not white. Explore Google Images as there are all sorts of house paint combinations.

Please tell us where you're located (nearest big city & state). Taking a photo from across the street that will show the entire front of your property would help also. How do you use this space? Do you need space for kids/grandkids and a dog to play? Would you use a fire pit & benches to hang out and visit with the neighbors? Are you focused on hiding the pole and making a pretty space with no defined function?

I'd start by getting books on garden design. There will probably be some from the library. Your gravel lends itself to the French style. But it might not be your style. So, start with a general style. Next, do structure. Obviously, you' need some paths. Then identify beds. There are a lot of gardens photos and articles on Houzz, so you might find something that works for you. Thanks, Celery. We were hoping to stay within the current flower bed that is already there. It may look like our front yard is large in the picture but it really is not. The current flower bed is 13 feet long, and 6 feet at its widest and 3 feet at its shortest.

Lovely house, I like it a lot. I'd keep plantings at the foundation very low -- like an evergreen ground cover -- periwinkle, or leadwort, maybe. If you want flowers or need shrubs for privacy, I'd put them in a separate bed out toward the road, in order to not overwhelm your porch.

What kind of tree is that at your garage? It is nice now, hopefully it's not a variety that gets too large.
