perennial cantaurea, helenium, heliopsis - first year bloomer?
Comments (3)Hey Kenny..re: Centaurea..I think those might have been my seeds.:O). Sorry, but they don't bloom the first year, but the leaves aren't unattractive. Try to mark the plant so you don't rip it out in error next spring..(from one who's done that!). Once established, they don't like to be moved, but I have successfully split off a couple of shoots to share with people. I could pot up a bit for you if you're coming near Oakville in the next little while, so you could have a bit of bloom this summer. Let me know via email. Is there going to be a spring swap in Etobicoke this year?...See MoreZonal denial- best method to overwinter first few years?
Comments (13)The biggest make or break provider when growing out of zone is your micro climate. It can vary one zone up/down in your own yard. If you don't have that area that provides the extra covering protection then sooner or later your conifer will perish. A micro climate is simply the local climate on a small scale. Micro climates are formed by hills and valleys, structures, paved areas, hedges, etc. These features may change airflow patterns, alter day length or light intensities, trap heat during the day and slowly release it during the night, or in other ways modify local climate. These 3 things need to be considered when growing plants adapted to a hardness zone warmer then your own. Location: Planting your warm-climate plants in a sunny, south-facing location against a fence or sun drenched wall will counteract the effects of shorter days and cold north winds. Shelter: Taking the time to tuck your plants in close proximity to a wind break screen again facing south is help full Mulch: A thick layer of dark-colored mulch keeps frost out of the ground and allows the soil to warm up earlier in the spring. Forget the overwintering for the first few years. That won't get it. Only providing the above mentioned protections on a permanent basis will insure a better then average survival rate when growing out of zone. Dave...See MoreBest of the First-Time Bloomers
Comments (17)Here are some of the runners up for the Top 10. LAVENDER REFLECTIONS - beautiful flowers and beautiful 4-way branching with 23 buds on the only scape I had. MAGNIFICENT DAD - This one took three years to bloom, but the flower was gorgeous. Bud count of 14. ICE CREAM EMPEROR - I got this Trimmer intro in spring a year ago, but the scapes had been cut off and it did not bloom then. I liked the looks of this near white. Bud count was low, but it's still in a pot. NO BOYS ALLOWED - Great color and form on this Davisson UF! WINTER TREASURE impressed me as being very white. It does have some pink blush in the sepals, but the petals are whiter than anything else I grow. Debra...See MoreWhat is the best way to overwinter for the first year?
