It would help if you moved all the stuff away and we could look at the whole fireplace wall. From the photos, the fireplace and wall seem out of balance but it is hard to tell. I think your stacked wood could look really interesting in the right context, again, it's hard to tell from the photo. It appears that the color tones of the wall, the fireplace and the floors seem a little off. I am afraid that whitewashing the tile might emphasize the tone differences between the floor and the paint. The other thing you might consider is adding wall trim to around the fireplace to make it more finished and add some height and balance. This a little more ornate than I was considering but it will give you an idea.

Thanks @Beth Too late to do nothing obviously, but that photo just doesn't do justice to how terrible the yellowish/tan color looked against our white/grey/blueish combo. In that photo it looks way more grey than in real life. I like your idea of matching the island, or the countertop. I had wondered about going a couple shades darker than the base wall color Agreeable Gray, or a couple shades lighter than the island Peppercorn, to stay within the greige or blue hues that are used on the walls/island. But maybe that gets too confusing. Thoughts? @tozmo1, thanks much for the pictures!

If this were my project, and I was struggling with color choices. I would prime the entire room, you will need to prime anyway. (The finished product is only as good as the prep.) After the whole space, including the ceiling, is primed, you can see the room in a different light. I would get the WHITES paint folder at your local home store and see what WHITE goes with your tile choice. Lighter is always better, and will modernize the space. accents of color can be introduced with furnishings.

HELP with new barstool, dining chairs, paint color. What barstool and dining chair designs and colors would work best? I'm still leaning towards a green paint shade and have ordered a couple samples of Behr's Sustainable and Sage Brush to try out. (BTW, everdebz, my paint prior to Oak Buff was Swiss Coffee throughout the entire house! First thing I did upon moving in, and then ten years ago I repainted the entire place with the help of a designer!) Requirements for stools and chairs -- comfortable (padded with backs), semi low profile, and small depth front-to-back. (My dining table pedestal prevents pushing the side chairs very far in under the glass top, and I don't like them sticking out a lot when not in use. Guess my table is too large for my space, but I don't want to replace it.) Here's a pick of a barstool I got from Amazon to try out, plus new picks of my existing furnishings/colors and the two paint colors: EDIT - don't like the stool coz it's too chunky and the fabric and leg colors don't work with my the dining room. Back to drawing board on stools...
