Best placement for sunroom?
Comments (16)We are also considering a sunroom on our future home to be built in South Carolina. In doing my research on the sensibility of a sunroom in SC I came across a window manufacturer who promotes triple glazed (3 panes of glass) for sunrooms. He had an exhibit set up in his showroom with three radiant heat lamps, the kind with the red bulb often seen in bathrooms. Positioned just a few inches in front of each lamp was a window. One set up had a single-glazed window, the next had a double-glazed window, and the third had a triple-glazed window. To demonstrate how radiant heat penetrates the window, I put my hand in front of the window to feel for the heat. The single glazed felt like nothing was between my hand and the lamp, the double glazed cut down on the radiant heat quite well. But the triple glazed window cut down so much on the radiant heat that I could not even feel the heat. Our sunroom will be on the north side of the house but in mid-summer with the sun reaching its furthest northerly point on the horizon, we will get some late afternoon/evening sun as it sets. We will use triple glazed windows to cut the radiant heat. I may end up designing the room with less window area than I had hoped for to better manage the heat gain. I think that sunroom designs and locations are very dependent on the region you are in and the amount of sun blocked by trees or structures. It is hard to relate an experience in Texas with one in Minnesota. Early on we thought we would do a screen porch but so many people say that the porch gets so dirty and dusty that you end up either cleaning daily or you end up not using it. There is no perfect solution!...See MoreHelp with entry/sunroom wall paint color
Comments (1)I would consider a light color of green with a gray hue such as SW 6162 Ancient Marble. I think the green hue would look good with the wood and the gray hue would go well with the rose. Right now SW has the small quarts on sale for $3 something so it would be a good weekend to pick up a few and see what you think...See MoreIncorporating pine-walled sunroom with traditional kitchen
Comments (3)If it is just a sunroom, it must have lots of windows, so maybe you could live with it and use lots of light matted artwork. I had much more of it than just a sunporch, and I had to paint it. I could not live with the knotty pine walls. They were so depressing: I felt like I was living in a cave because we have heavy shade. The only place I find dark pine attractive is on the floor. I have had it in several homes, and I painted it every time and never regretted it....See MoreHeight of knee wall in 2nd story sunroom
Comments (9)The roof and floor stay. Everything else is getting removed and reframed 16"OC, with a certain height (??) knee wall and windows on top of it. Total clearance is 79", but there will be a new support beam under the roof and necessary headers over windows so that leaves, I would guess 70" total wall height to work with. I am trying to avoid expensive custom size windows so the variable is the knee wall. But I don't know if there is a requirement for height of knee wall in a 2nd story sunroom. If I can have a 2' high kneewall, I can fit a series of standard 24x36 non tempered windows above it and everything works out within my budget. If a kneewall has to be higher... say 3' (like a deck guardrail), then I'm SOL ;-)...See MoreMarilyn Stirrett
