First time quilter question!

lekhouse

Hello all,

I am making my first quilt out of my children's outgrown clothing. It's a foundation-pieced string quilt and I would like it to be a summer weight throw that folds up compactly. I am thinking of either foregoing a middle layer completely or using something very thin (maybe an old flannel sheet?) and then tying it onto the backing.

My question is, if my squares are foundation pieced and I plan to finish the quilt by tying, do I need to quilt the top? Presumably my squares are reinforced thanks to the foundation, but will the quilt look unfinished if I don't quilt the top?

I don't mind the extra work but I'm pretty happy with my piecing so far and afraid to mess it up with novice quilting.

Thanks in advance!
