We took the g'kids to see the Minion movie. They enjoyed it.

We've seen Top Gun and really enjoyed that!

Where the Crawdads Sing is on my list as well. We only go to about 2 movies a year, so we'll pass our "quota." LOL

My friends and I have started going to movies again--when we can find one that we think we will enjoy. We have seen all three of the ones mentioned by the OP. Of the three, Where the Crawdads Sing is my favorite--with Top Gun a close second. Having read the Crawdad book, I was eager to see the movie and it follows the book really well. Top Gun is very exciting. As an Elvis fan, I couldn't pass that up either. The story was a downer to me; however, the young actor did a most wonderful job with Elvis's moves, singing and voice. I could watch all of them again.

We have seen all of them. Loved them all except Nope. I am still processing how I feel about it.

I'll have to wait until Top Gun2 comes out on streaming, as my spouse loathes Tom Cruise. We're MCU fans anyway so our group of friends - mostly Gen Xers 20 yrs younger than we are, LOL - have gotten into the habit of renting a private showing.

The viewing was great - comfy reclining seats, a group of 14 scattered around the room, for $20/pp. Well worth it, this was opening weekend and the other showings were sold-out, so wall to wall with viewers crammed in, unlike our private theatre.

We saw Thor (#3) Love and Thunder a few weeks ago, which was very enjoyable. Not the best MCU movie but certainly not the worst. Shame it hasn't done better at the box office, but the Jane Foster character is such a loser. Natalie Portman did a great job with what was there, but both DC and MCU are very weak in portraying strong female characters.

Went out for drinks and noshes afterwards so got a chance to try a new restaurant as well. It was great fun and everyone agreed it's by far the best way to see a movie. You just have to organize everybody to show up for whatever date/time you are able to rent!

the last movie I went to was Firehouse Dog - I went with my former boss, my closest friend. we went during a school day and were the only 2 there. we had such a great time. we're both dog people. it was great. prior to that was The passiom of Christ - went with the same person.

sweet_betsy, I think the makers of Elvis were trying to appeal to the younger generations, who aren't too familiar with Elvis' history and fame. They had to make it more "catchy". It was certainly a different-type movie-but I still liked it very much. Still, at the end, you remember what a great loss his death was to the millions who loved him and just how famous he really was. I don't think the younger generation realized just how famous he was. There is definately no other like him.

At some point during Elvis the Colonel said to have been from west virginia but his accent sounded European to me and I was very distracted by it. I thought the movie was good and the actor did a credible job.

Has anyone seen ”Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris?” I think it may have already come and gone in my little town while I was away.

satine, I think Colonel Parker illegally immigrated from the Netherlands...if you remember the part in the movie about Elvis wanting to perform internationally...I won't say anymore LOL

I am another who sees 2 movies a year in a movie-going year.. So, I did see West Side Story earlier and recently saw Elvis. I was never a fan of his, but when we were in Tennessee roadtripping several years ago, of course, I felt that if we were in Memphis we should see Graceland. That was so enlightening to me. I really can't explain it but it was just so touching .

I didn't know anything about Col Parker other than I recognized the name but I knew nothing of the story or even lawsuits. I too was extremely distracted by his accent. The accent was deliberate but it was too distracting to me. Finally at the end it was said that he was in fact from the Netherlands and had come here illegally.

In an case, I thought the movie was terrific and I especially thought the actor was amazing. I agree that the actor was good looking but not as stunning as Elvis was. I would have liked more about Elvis even though this was very much about his career and relationship with the Colonel. I really appreciated the clips of the reactions to his death. It did bring it home and highlight what a huge figure he was.

So I am probably covered for movies this year too, unless something really grabs me.

terilyn, I'm now having second thoughts about seeing Nope. After researching, it sounds like a horror and gorey film(?), which I don't watch. I don't mind "thillers" but can't do the gorey, if that is what it is.

I rarely went out to movies before the pandemic and haven't been inside a theater since. I really prefer watching movies at home with DH and the cats. If I'm going to run the risk of catching the C-virus it's gotta be for something much more stimulating than a movie theater. I do want to see Maverick but will wait until it's available for home viewing.

No one mentioned the newest Dowton Abbey movie. Saw that in June and Elvis in July. We enjoyed them both. The previews at Elvis left us vacant. They all looked horrid. Maybe this Christmas season something decent will be out again.

We haven't been to a theater since before covid so we rent new movies via On Demand/cable. "Nope" looks interesting and our local hard-nosed movie critic/reviewer gave it 3.5 stars out of 4 with a thumbs up "Yep".

I haven't been in a movie theatre in 15 years.

Arcy, I saw the Downton Abbey movie when it came out. I found it somewhat disappointing. The story line seemed to be ”people like Downton Abbey, so let’s throw a bunch of scenes together because they will pay to come see them.”

I just read that Shonka Dukureh, who played Big Mama Thornton in the Elvis movie, died Thursday. She was 44.

cyn, thank you so much for posting that video. I, too, loved it. Remembering all of the Arlo concerts I've attended. He is such a great performer; I love his voice and his storytelling interwoven into his songs. What a treat it was to see that performance!

I never saw Arlo, but from time to time ( like once in a blue moon) there would be Arlo sightings iin my general neighborhood visiting with his mother. She had a dance school right by the elevated train station. Marjorie Mazia.
