Comments (11)Hi Marlorena, My foxgloves are Foxy hyrbrids, so not the true, old fashioned ones. And I have to confess - I didn't grow them from seed - I bought them as advanced seedlings from the garden centre. They have managed to flower but I don't know if they "grow well" - actually, the one I stupidly planted in full sun next to the hot stone wall did terribly - its leaves turned yellow and crispy and it kept getting spider mites or something - it looked awful. It's since died. The other 2 are planted in partial shade and have done better - but they suffer terribly from aphids!! :-( Like horrible, horrible infestation. It's really put me off growing them again next year, even though I do love the flowers. Do you get terrible aphids on your foxgloves? Oh, yes, my salvias have been brilliant for keeping constant colour in the garden! They're really drought-tolerant and love the heat & sun and just keep blooming non-stop with no attention from me. And they grow like mad. They've all quadrupled in size. I've got the common purple one which has clumps of narrow spires - and then this hot pink one which is more like little flowers on stalks. I'm not sure what it's called - I think it's from a series called "Heatwave" - and looking at their colour chart, I think mine is the hot pink one called "Sizzle" https://www.pma.com.au/Plants/Plant.aspx?plant_id=462 I wasn't sure I liked it very much in the beginning - the colour is a bit strong and I like the pastel/soft pinks & purples more - but it's sort of won me over because it never stops blooming, so it's really good for always giving me some colour in the garden. I've got one in the middle bed, between Windemere and The Fairy, and one by the fence next to Pierre the Ronsard (Eden)... Here it is, next to the purple salvia - and with Pierre in the background. The purple daisy is an osteospermum and that's been another one that's been fantastic for continuous blooms. Do you have those in your garden? ~ HY...See MoreReblooms continue in garden
Comments (20)Kay, I am surprised South Seas did not open early for you. Interesting how they perform differently for people, isn’t it? Nat, funny about your zinnias being so tall!!! Liliputs are pretty. Brad and Nancy, it is interesting you have not seen the chimneys. You certainly have the crayfish/crawfish in your state. I went down this morning to see if they were still there. Area was mowed last week and the tall one was mowed down (probably dulled the blades!). Here is what I saw. Fresh one coming up. Perfect symmetry. I was standing directly over this one so it is shaded. Side by side dwellers-one with and one without a chimney-one without was probably mowed down More interesting facts-usually just one per burrow unless mating. Burrows can go as deep as 15 feet almost many tunnels are built horizontally. And snakes are said to hibernate in the holes. And you can see different colors on the wads or balls based on soil levels. But you can tell by the grass how dry it is on top! So at least there is a water level down there somewhere!! And I bet no one thought they would learn so much about crawfish on a daylily forum!! I posted the photo because I thought it was an interesting feature in my yard at the time. But again, glad to see the interest....See Moreorganic_kitten
