I did not buy gas in L.A. before driving to Palm Springs/Cathedral City on Saturday because my gas gauge said that I had about half a tank, and I knew that I can drive round trip with at least 1/4 tank to spare. However, I think my gas gauge is not working properly because the empty light came on as I was about 5 miles from Palm Springs, but I knew that I only had to go another 5 miles to get to the gas station on the way to my house, and so I went there to get gas.

When I filled my tank, it took 10.6 gallons, and I had thought that my tank only held 11 gallons, but I looked it up, and it holds 13.2 gallons, and so I was not as empty as I had thought. The needle was not even close to being on empty, and so I think the needle position is off.

Gas price was $6.35, and so it cost over $67 to fill it, which is by far the most I've ever spent.

I had a feeling that traffic was somewhat lighter than normal, and so I began to wonder if perhaps people here are driving a bit less, due to the gas prices.

After an initial spike with the start of the Ukraine war, prices reduced a bit and leveled off for most of the summer. Until about a month to 6 weeks ago when they started to climb again......and fast!! They are hovering right around $5 per gallon for regular in most areas to as much as $5.79 in more rural locations. But the reservation stations are cleaning up at the moment with gas at $3,99!!! And they honor the grocery store loyalty discounts as well. I filled up :-))

Like Lars, my car has a defective gas gauge and can swing from showing 'full' to 'empty' in a flash so I pay close attention to mileage.

This morning they gave the average price for CA at $6.05.

High-$5s to the mid-$6s is what I've been seeing, same state as lars. About 50-75 cents lower at Costco, for those who are okay with waiting or go at off hours.

Looks like the cheapest in town is $3.29. I filled up for the first time in a while last week and it was a few cents more than that.

We were on the way to Dr. apt and had time to stop for a couple gal. to make sure we had enough to get home. Put $10.00 in and were stunned that the indicator did NOT move at all!!!

This is an overly broad generalization. What you've referred to as a "base price" is not the same everywhere. And is not very controllable for one reason - most "oil companies" are not fully integrated from the wellhead to the pump. Companies that produce sell crude at market prices, others that refine and sell at retail buy at those same prices. Transportation costs are also a factor and vary by location.

Multiply the Canadian price per liter by 2.75 to get price per U.S. dollar. This will fluctuate with exchange rate.

Most definitely heading up. The cheapest is Costco which is $3.79.

Most others in the area are in the just under $4 range. ( 3.92-3.99).

$3.33 at Sam's Club here, lately it's been in a .20/gal cent range at various stations.

I'm seeing $3.30 to $3.40 range right now.

Here in the Albuquerque area of New Mexico, it's about $3.60. BUT--we just returned from a 1 month trip to Greece. Gas averaged just over $10 a gallon!! We paid just over 2 Euros per litre, the dollar now is par (or less) with the Euro. YIKES! So I'm not complaining about $3.60!!

North Idaho we got down to $4.05 for ONE day. Back to $4.50 now. 😔

Michigan, western UP, have seen price range from $3.99 to $4.25 today at different stations.

Near Chicago 4.79. Of course it's always higher closer to express way and airport.

Transportation of gasoline is certainly a factor in costs, I would surmise, with less easily accessible areas having to pay more.

Unleaded here in west central FL is around $3.36 or thereabouts today. Diesel was around $4.16, IIRC.

Just drove past a locally-owned gas station where the sign said $3.39. Rural north Missouri.

Prices here were running anywhere from $2.98-$3.50~/gallon for regular, but as soon as the news broke that OPEC+ was going to cut production they spiked to $3.60-$4.05. Now they have settled a bit, lowest is back to $3.39-3.45, but the highest stations are clinging to $3.99 (just as they did the last time prices fell).

Something to be mindful of, especially those of you who drive older cars.

While gasoline is a commodity product, what does vary from brand to brand is the additives that are put in. There is a branded additive called "Top Tier" that is supported and recommended by most car manufacturers.

Top Tier additives exceed federal standards and reduce deposits of carbon and other materials in the fuel and combustion areas. The result is better engine operation, better mileage, and reduced likelihood of deposits causing repair work. The thing is, most major gas retailers do sell Top Tier gas and most independents and smaller ones don't. So while you may pay less for product from some retailers, you could run into problems if you don't alternate that with buying Top Tier gas from the bigger guys too. This isn't marketing, it's for real. (Something I learned about a few years ago from a car dealer, when buying a new car. There were fewer Top Tier participants at the time and the brand I bought recommended using Top Tier only.).

It may be that there are only a few (or even no) refineries near where you live, yet there may be eight different brands of gasoline to choose from. How does that work?

It happens regularly that one truck bound for a Shell stations, another for Exxon's, another for Costcos, another for Marathon or Shamrock, etc., can pull out of the same refinery. How could that be? What differs from one brand to another is the additives and, to an extent, each brand's standards for how the pumps and tanks at retail stations are maintained. Additives specific for a brand are added to the gas before the product leaves the refinery and is delivered to particular stations. This is a regular thing and brands that have refineries trade product (you took 100000 gallons of mine In Houston last week, I'll take 100,000 of yours in Chicago this week).

As between brands, the gasoline part of the gasoline is the same, the additives vary.

Phoggie, remember that 2 years ago demand was at rock bottom: we were in the first months of the pandemic, people were staying home, airlines were not flying. Also, Russia and Saudi Arabia were waging a price war, and domestic refineries were shutting down/ producers started to trim production because the prices were so low.

Gas here on the west coast has not been below $2.00/gal in recent memory. Certainly not in the last 2 years.......maybe not in the last 5! I can't remember it being less than $3.00/gal for at least a few years.

Today down to 327 in Wi. Too bad we didn't need any.

Still over $6 in So. Calif. So hard on working people who have to drive 45 minutes to an hour to get to work, esp. minimum wage workers. It's brutal.

Agree! We drove by Sam’s and Costco today (a block from each other here). Both were $4.98 which is about the lowest around.

We are inching down again. Still have 3 stubborn stations at $3.99, but several are down to $3.89 and lower. The 15 lowest priced stations haven't changed much from a week ago: $3.35-3.37.
