9. Relaxed in red. New built-in storage gives the family of this Boston dining room a more functional and beautiful space. During the renovation, the designer took down walls to reconfigure the dining room, kitchen and mudroom. That allowed her to create deeper cabinets on either side of the window. The tufted banquette is covered in an electric-blue upholstery. Surrealist paintings contrast with the traditional chinoiserie wallcovering. The table adds an Art Deco touch.

To create some drama in the space, designer Michael Carter added a geometric plaster ceiling and textured wallpaper. “Hands down, the ceiling detailing was truly transformative,” he says.
