This home is located in New England, on a site formerly occupied by an antique colonial house that was beyond repair. An eclectic country house, it is inspired by elements from both a European and Colonial past, resulting in a timeless, aesthetically pleasing home that sits comfortably among the antique colonial outbuildings extant on the property. Called âÂÂTerrasol Woods,â most of its energy use is sourced from the earth, the sun and wood.

In the Midwest, we call your home a bilevel. In other parts of the country (and in Canada) it is called a back split. Yours has a nice contemporary look to it. If you are searching for inspiration photos, use the term “bilevel.” Good luck!

I wouldn't worry about what to call it. If you like a more modern type of farmhouse look, this exterior is probably one of the easiest to make it look like one. Check out these pics and follow what they've done. Since you're getting new windows, look at doing the darker exterior color like black or a dark bronze, bring in some wood accents, and if you need a new roof at some point, look at metal. your little overhang porch could easily be done like this. as for the interior, love JudyG's design w/the wood entry. removing that wall and opening up the staircase w/that stair style would be perfect for the look you want. taking down that wall would look something like this: but you could choose the style of staircase you like

Whatever it is called, it looks fabulous! Built in 1910, if it's in good shape (which it appears to be), you have a gem on your hands! I'd tread carefully in whatever you do, and plan any work with classicism in mind. I wouldn't go modern either in renovating rooms or in decor. No knocking down walls to make the interior "open concept" or painting everything gray. No laminate floors. Keep original details as much as possible. Think long and hard before you decide to paint any of that old woodwork. Plan. Plan. Plan. Use quality materials and hire only competent and vetted professionals. Get ideas from "Old House Online" or "Retro Renovators" or "This Old House." Stay away from mass-market junk at the big box stores; use quality branded reproductions (Historic Housefitters, Rejuvenation). Restore and re-use as much as possible. Go to estate sales and antique stores. Live in the house for a while before you do anything. Did I mention planning??? Good luck with your projects!
