Greenhouse recommendation

This is my current greenhouse:

The size is (L)56.3”x (W)56.3”x (H)76.7”.

It's functional, but a little wimpy. I have more plants to put in there now, though, so I'd like to upgrade to something bigger (obviously) and more sturdy.

What do you all use?

That price, though! $2500 for the entry level 8x11, then $700 for the entry level 5' extension :-O

The first number of the fertilizer analysis is always nitrogen, which is extremely important for the healthy growth and development of all plants. However, if too much is applied, we will sacrifice plentiful blooms and fruit production in exchange for excessive green vegetative growth. I always make sure that I use a soluble fertilizer with higher phosphorus percentage, and have been doing so for many years, including when I was filling production green houses to the brim every spring. I also use organic based products in my 'in ground' beds, so that the minor elements are also included. Any fertilizer with NPK is considered 'balanced'. The percentages do NOT have to be the same. An unbalanced (so called) product is one that is missing one of the other primary elements entirely, such as ammonium nitrate (34-0-0) or triple super phosphate (0-46-0).

I have the 6x8 palram and I can't imagine any way to switch out the polycarb for glass. I've only had mine a year but it wintered well and has stood up to lots of wind/rain/snow etc.

szut, I have built both a wood framed and steel framed GH. First was the wood one. It has survived well but is in need of a repaint and recaulk which was part of the reason I went with steel for the second GH. The other reason was strength. Wood 2x framing is fine for smaller structures. But if you are trying to span longer widths, the size of the wood becomes prohibitive. Especially if you have high snow or wind loads to contend with (I have both). I think you will find Al for structural members is not doable for other than rather small sizes (hobby GHs, etc). Perhaps if you use built up Al girders, but that would be very pricey. Most commercial GHs use steel structures. I ended up going with steel tube arches from a commercial GH, which I made into a lean-to GH on the side of a barn. Given the structural loads it had to meet (50# snow and 135mph wind) it was relatively cheap (no doubt would have been cheaper in less extreme environments). IMO if you can build with wood 2x material, making the transition to steel tubing should not be that hard. You'll need a few new tools (metal saw and drill), but in many ways it was just like working on a big erector set. As a cost saving, you could look into buying a used commercial GH, or at least the frame. That could give you the structural material at a very inexpensive cost. Something that is harder to do with wood 2x material. My steel GH is too new for me to say how it will fair on the maintenance side. But I expect it to handle the moisture better than wood, although it will need some touch up painting no doubt in time.

I think that your area is warmer than mine and I have a greenhouse but I never started any seeds there. I only use it for the cold sensitive plants that are in pots. A better solution would be to start the plants in a spare room or the laundry where the temperature is controlled. Most of what I grow is from seeds, I start them inside and then put them back in the sunny porch, I raise more than 60 seedlings at the time for me and friends. If you are handy like some of the members that post here, you can install a multiple seed starting space using built in shelves and lights and use it all the year. I would not call the Grow More greenhouse an entry level model. It comes with thicker and better insulated panels than I have seen on many commercial greenhouses, hinged Dutch door, automated roof vents, etc.. I started looking at cheaper aluminum greenhouses first like the Harbor Freight and Amazon models, but I ultimately settled on something that would last and not have to worry about flying away in a storm. A warranty longer than 90 days or 1 year is nice too.

I think someone deleted 2 or 3 posts? The conversation is confusing now :-(

But anyway. I meant "entry level" as in "their cheapest model" :-) Not as a comparison to other brands of greenhouses.

I'd like to have something in the 8x11' range, but it's hard to justify that much money for a hobby. I store some potted plants for the winter and start some seeds in February, that's about all I would need it for.

Sure. I get that. It may be more of an investment than many people want to make in a greenhouse. I was just explaining what drove me to my decision. I am an avid grower and spend a lot of time in my greenhouse because it is relaxing for me. Have been for years and plan to for years to come. I would probably not want to invest that much money into a greenhouse if I were just looking for something to overwinter some plants.

I enjoy working outside during the warm months to destress and get away from work, but for now, yeah, the greenhouse is mainly just to overwinter plants.

What I have now is really too small and wimpy, but the ones I'm seeing in the $200-500 price range don't seem much better! They all have rough reviews, and I don't want to waste that much money if it ends up being no better (or even worse) than what I already have.

It's entirely possible that I'd spend more time in one if it were larger and better, so I guess that's a catch 22, ya know? I won't know if the expense is justified until I spend it! LOL
