Any idea what’s wrong with my wisteria?

We have 4 wisteria in our yard. 1 is about 6 years old and the other 3 are just over a year old.

One of the year old wisteria has recently developed these spots and discoloration. The other ones are gorgeous. Any idea what this is? I don’t see any bugs or powdery mildew.

I’d really appreciate any advice.

To me that just looks like expected, natural deterioration of older foliage in what appears to be a very hot, dry climate. Not every leaf will remain pristine all season. Are they being sufficiently watered?

They also appear to be unmulched and that isn't helping.

Looks like you have a Leaf spot disease caused by a fungus and probably accelerated by over watering (too wet)....You could try to apply a fungicide to try to control the spread. The fungus causes premature leaf drop and may or may not kill your plant....depending on the severity. Ian

I used Miracle Gro Moisture Control Organic Soil (I bought a big bag at Costco and used it for other plants, so it is what I had here). The pot does have some drainage holes on the sides and drains out into a saucer shapped edge. I rarely (if ever) water it to the point where water comes out of the drainage spots though. When I repotted the plant the soil was very moist. The roots didn't look alarming, but to be honest, I don't exactly know what I am looking for. I have been encouraged to see some small new growth on it, but want to be sure I'm doing the right thing to let that new growth have a chance. I also don't want to throw away a viable plant, but if there is no hope, I will move on.

I didn’t think it was a match for Alternaria either, pretty close, but these are very light surface scars. I did have some tomatoes crack in addition to the cracking in the photo. Thanks! I’ll treat the plants for stink bugs and keep my fingers crossed.

Mediterranean herbs - rosemary, sage, thyme, oregano - love heat! So does basil. As long as they receive enough water, they will thrive outside. I'd want a better draining, less moisture retentive soil for the perennial herbs but the basil should be happy in the potting soil. I prefer to grow my basil in a container (but only outdoors) because I can then maximize both the sun and heat it receives. Like floral, my summers are a tad cool ;-)

welcome to the forums.. in every post tell us where you are.. big city name ...

are you doing xeriscape other than this plants??? .. how do you water these plant... and i agree with the mulch comment. ...

from these pix.. is seems you have very little damage... any disease would affect the whole plant.. not one or two random leaves or branches...

i wondered if someone walked by and ruffled this group of leaves.. and damage appeared when he heat hit... hard to tell from these pix ...

It looks to me like some sort of fungal leaf spot - which is usually not fatal or extremely damaging, just unattractive and annoying :-) Keep the vines well pruned to ensure good air circulation and prevent creating a moist environment that would suit fungus. Also clean up any fallen leaves and remove affected ones. Be cautious with watering and mulching to avoid creating a damp environment that might promote fungal growth. It would indeed be useful to know where you are to know more about the environmental conditions they are growing in. Is there a local garden growing them without problems so you have somewhere to compare your conditions to/someone local to discuss the growing process with? What kind of wisterias are they? It's hard to tell from the pictures but it looks like they might be twining counterclockwise which could mean either Chinese or American wisteria....

We are in the central coast of California. Wisteria are popular here. We have 4 of them. One is 6 years old and beautiful with tons of blooms and recovers every year with a vengeance.

We added 3 more last year. Two are doing amazing. This one which is on one side of the pergola. The one on the other side of the pergola is gorgeous. They get the same amount of sun and water as they are on the same drip system. That’s why we’re so unsure of what is wrong with it.

My guess would be that it came in with the spores (or whatever is causing the problem) so you need to be through and careful to clean it up so it doesn’t spread to your other ones.

As a wisteria-lover, I’d love to see pictures of yours in bloom….

Have you checked to make sure the emitter on the drip system is working--not plugged up with grit or hard water deposits?
