Should Electrician have used new circuit breakers?
Comments (8)"Did he verify each new breaker was operating correctly? Other than turning it on?" I don't know. What I can say is that he got the highest recommendations from a building tradesman that was my next door neighbor before the flood. He said that, of all the electricians that he'd worked with, Brian is the guy he wants doing his electrical work. Shortly after he arrived to do the first work I asked him to do, service panel/meter pan replacement, consolidation of two sub panels from clothes closet locations and about a dozen new circuits, he asked for a broom and a dustpan. I mentioned that to my mom who was visiting at the time and she responded by commenting that she noticed that he wiped his feet when he walked in. Is tidiness and indicator of good work in other aspects? I think so. In subsequent observation of his work, I noticed that he worked pretty hard to get some stuff just right. Once I suggested that he just give up and just leave the cable be even though it would look a little sloppy if anyone ever saw it which was unlikely. He had bid the job and was not doing it by the hour. $15,000 in HVAC $350 in electrical work +/- $30 in breakers I am sure he made a bundle on the breakers....See MoreLicensed electrician plz answer, is this safe?
Comments (3)There's no requirement for conduit in the basement and no clearance requirements from water pipes. As Randy points out, a little condensation isn't going to hurt things. If you have water flowing into what is supposed to be a dry location you've got bigger issues than the cables....See MoreVictimized by an electrician - PLEASE help!
Comments (21)Thanks to all who were kind enough to respond. The building department does deal with electrical contractors and he does have a license. 311 referred me to the building department for an electrician issue as well the electrical union. They do inspections at no cost. He came down about $1,250, but he's still trying to charge me for things he presented as being needed due to flood damage when they were not. He is an out and out liar, telling me that I needed two lines for a washer/dryer and that it was code. Another electrician told me a gas dryer doesn't need it's own line and both could be on the same line. Then I'm told I at least needed one line added, but it's been that way for over 50 years. He said it's because it's around water, but the outlets he added were not the ones with the red reset button especially for that. They look like regular outlets. They also have no backing and are loose in the wall. There are other things he did but this post is getting too long. About the light switch covers. The plug outlets in the basement were under water and he said he replaced the outlet boxes and covers, but what does that have to do with the light switches? Do the light switch boxes need to be replaced if the plug outlets get wet? If no boxes were replaced, yes, he did try and charge me $250 for Decora light switch covers. I've filed a complaint with the building department and the BBB so we will see....See MoreWhat counts as "working" hours for electrician billing?
Comments (17)People like this are the worst to work for. you need to remember youre paying us for more than the 7 hours were there. we have to go and get parts, we take lunch, which we are legally owed working an eight hour day. theres also usualy a $150 service charge fee just to go out there. if we work a full day for someone we will sometimes wave that too. That's why time and material billing is a dino that is mostly extinct. It just creates something to argue about. Plus you get better at your craft and you make less? Or you get accused of riding the clock. It just doesn't work -- flat rate may get you less jobs, but then you're not spending time squabbling. You can focus more on your work. Just a suggestion, Dave. ;-) You will still come in contact with people who do not know the value of a buck and how far it currently goes, but don't let that stop you....See MoreHenry M
