Hands-free opening for trash pull-out
Comments (48)Walt - I'll take some photos soon and post them. Holy grail, haha... yes, I agree. You know, I actually grew up with a trashcan with self-opening/closing lid, but can't find any mention of these online, not even a picture. Yet, back in the day in Switzerland, just about all trashcans functioned like this. Now the available systems are expensive and complicated, and demand exacting dimensions to function, not something I could possibly duplicate. The Swiss contraptions from the40s/50s and 60s relied on a very simple, adjustable and thus, foolproof idea. The trashcans sat in a holder on the inside of the under-sink cabinet door. When the door was opened, the can would swing out along with it, but the hinged lid was restrained by a thin adjustable chain from the back/top of the cab interior. The chain was attached so as to force the lid to rise up when opening and drop the lid shut again during closing. The chain length mattered, but could easily be adjusted. I adapted the idea to my Ikea trash pullout under the sink. So far, my set up is just temporary (the can is held in place with masking tape etc). I will rebuild with more permanent materials as soon as I find some time. In the meantime, we're enjoying my hands-free trash pullout....See MoreTrash compactor or trash pull-out?
Comments (11)I have to say that when I had a group of young (that is, younger than me) friends over and they saw our freestanding trash compactor, they laughed and said they hadn't seen one since they were kids. Thanks! In any case, we replaced it with trash cans under the sink when we did the reno. Our small kitchen didn't have space for a pullout or we might have gone that way. How many people live in your house? When all 3 kids were growing up, the trash compactor was marvelous. When it got to be just the 2 of us, it could take 3 weeks to fill. We made separate trash runs for smelly things like meat trays. If you have a houseful of people, I say replace it until you do your reno and then reevaluate. You're unlikely to be sorry you have it, and it's so much easier not trying to blend a new element into a cabinet run that you're going to replace anyway....See MoreToe operated latch to release trash pullout --nomenclature?

Comments (6)In that video it looks like the push mechanism part was removed from the mounting part that would normally be attached to the bottom of the cabinet. Then it was mounted in the perfect spot so it hits the rail. I'm not sure if you could separate those two pieces on the Blum pushers. I can't really inspect ours at the moment, but I will see if I can remember to look at it later. My feeling from remembering when we installed it is that it is one solid item. I think the only way to make it work with your insert is if you can make sure you can mount it vertically where you need it. Maybe you do need the more expensive Haefle so you can separate the mounting from the pusher. Another alternative might be to somehow attach a thin sheet of metal or something solid to the back of the garbage insert so the pusher has something to push against. Unfortunately these pushers and inserts are not so cheap that you can just buy it and try to make it work....See MoreEinav B
