Blum Servo Drive for trash or other solution
Comments (2)Ours is just in a standard 18" base cabinet. It isn't hooked up as the electrical was just installed on Friday, and I've been sick this weekend, but we ordered RTA cabinets through Barker, and there's nothing particularly odd or anything about the cabinet with the servo drive. We do have a very unobtrusive finger pull for when the power is out and a plate that reads PUSH for most other days. The servo drive comes with a template for Blum tandem box or wooden box drawers. Apparently, you could operate several drawers off the single driver, but we just have the trash can with the drive....See MoreBlum Servo Drive anyone?
Comments (20)I just came across this thread as I am now planning a kitchen with Servodrive on all drawers. I have been using the servodrive on garbage drawers for three years now and would not go without it. The unit another posted that is at IKEA is actually the BLUM item simply branded as "Utrusta" for IKEA. For my install it cost much less. Very simple to install if you have access to a power outlet. An interesting aspect of the Servo Drive is that it gives it's kick whenever the position of the drawer is disturbed, normally by pushing with your knee, but, it also reacts to a slight pull so it will act as an assist. Very nice in the case of a heavy drawer. I went with the BLUM TIP-ON system for another kitchen recently and have been very disappointed. The mechanism is a wonder of engineeriing and design but alas the way it works is annoying. With both the Servo Drive and the Tip-On, make no mistake, you will experience unintentional openings. The difference is that with the Tip-On the drawer must be "thown" closed with just the right force to overcome the spring and reload the mechanism. The Servo Drive closes just like a normal self closing drawer, much less annoying. I have two trash drawers, the cullery drawer and the plate drawer on Servo Drive. You can't imagine how often I find myself standing in front of one of the other drawers pushing it and wondering why it isn't opening. After a few tries I figure it out but have forgotten what I was looking for. Seriously though, don't even consider a mix of Servo and Tip-On unless you want to end up in the looney bin and as for our Miele dishwasher that you must "knock" to open, that's another bit of madness. In closing, Servo Drive is an absolute pleasure for the trash drawer. You probably have power right beside it under the sink. Get it at IKEA...See MoreBlum Servo Drive
Comments (4)Great. I'm hoping it will eliminate the issue of wear on the cabinet. You can always find the trash pullout in a not brand new kitchen because, no matter what, that cabinet's finish takes the most abuse. I found a cute metal push plate (which says, PUSH - how clever, right?) so I hope that furthers my plan to save that cabinet's finish. Plus, it will make that cabinet more obvious for guests since its finish will remain pristine! ;-)...See MoreUtrusta (Ikea version of Servo-drive) question
Comments (23)I am pretty sure this is the trash pull out we have: http://www.kitchensource.com/trash/rv-4wcsd-1835dm-2.htm. The price shown is for the whole system. Yes, I was able to purchase separately from the distributor......maybe that option is not available from a local dealer. I actually tried purchasing from a local dealer and they weren't able to figure out how to order what I needed (!!?). That is how I ended up going to McKillican American for my purchase. After we determined we needed a different pull out I went back for the pullout and glide mechanism. This is what I learned: the glide mechanism was the important piece of the puzzle for us. The bottom of each different rev a shelf pullout is routed out for installation of the specific glides required be it soft close or servo drive, etc. Everything comes fitted out for the specific use. Believe me, DH and I tried everything before going back for the second part (the pull out). After reading DIY's comments, I took a look at our glides and yes, they look similar to the Blum glides on our other drawers. DIY's cabinet maker must have routed the box to accommodate the glides. We had to purchase a new box. To find your local rev a shelf distributor go to the Rev a Shelf website and click on find an authorized dealer - be sure to click the box "Distributors - US." http://www.rev-a-shelf.com/rev-pages/find-dealer.aspx I'm sorry I don't know how to insert a working link. Maybe you can copy and paste. I hope this all makes sense. And good luck. It's a process, but worth it in the end....See MoreLisa
