What is your favorite wine?
Comments (21)I'm fortunate to live in an area that has 60-some wineries, some of which are quite good. Just tonight I went to one of my favorites, called Glass House Winery that is named for the large greenhouse full of tropical plants attached to the tasting room. An acquaintance of mine was booked there to play music with his jazz trio and I thought it would be a fun way to spend Friday night. In my opinion their white wines are good, but their three red wines are exceptional. Tonight I had this wine: C-Villian This red blend of 82% Chambourcin and 9% Cabernet Franc, 9% Merlot is smooth and bright, with strong aromas of fig and raisin, and a rich full-bodied mouth feel. It is affectionately named C-Villian to honor our city and our neighbors Although my favorite of theirs is: Glass House Winery Barbera Reserve This is a bold red made from 75% Barbera, 13% Merlot, 12% Malbec grapes and made in the Passito style of drying the grapes to enhance flavors and aromas, much like the Italian Amaroné wines. I was talking to the owner, and he said the 2012 Barbera was pretty much a total loss due to excessive rain late in the season, and that the 2013 will be pretty good when it is ready in August. He then went on to say that the 2014, in his opinion will be world class....See MoreWhat is your current favorite paint brand?
Comments (35)I don't color match from brand to brand and I don't try to customize, personally. Since I have tended not to fully repaint, ever, in a different colors (I've moved first, I guess) --I want complete reproducibility, because I do touch up. I couldn't find exactly what I wanted in Benjamin Moore for particular room this time and that's when I went to Fine Paints of Europe, there, and that meant buying a fandeck, too. What this means is, if I am committed to using a particular paint brand, and I can't find exactly the shade in say, Behr, that I would prefer in Benjamin Moore, I will use the "close enough" in Behr. (This would be if I were picking paint for someone else--I would use BM or FPE but many people will not spend the money). Because quite honestly, I don't think that you can really tell the difference between two subtle differences in paint color if an entire room is painted in it and you are not comparing one swatch to the next. If you have no point of reference to what the exact color is, I don't think anybody could walk into a room that had one of two very close paint colors and say "this is X, not Y" And I get an almost perfect score on those color discernment tests where you have to separate and line up different shades in order. However, if you custom mix or have had color matches made that are not a specific formula within a paint brand, it can be almost impossible to get a match from mix to mix if you need to touch up....See MoreWhat's your favorite brand of coffee?
Comments (24)I buy either Cafe Pilon or Cafe Bustelo pre-ground espresso that comes in vacuum-packed bricks. The important thing for me is that they provide a very consistent espresso grind that allows the coffee to work well with my inexpensive espresso maker. When I would buy whole beans and grind them myself, the result was too coarse and too fine at the same time....See MoreWhat is your favorite wine?
Comments (80)"They are death on your community small businesses." When I need to buy something, it's value for money-quality-convenience-selection that direct where I go. Sometimes one or two get compromised, depending on the situation, but usually not. What leads to the death of any community small businesses is an inability to be excellent and to otherwise compete successfully in the marketplace. Those that do so thrive. Those that don't go away, as they should. There are a couple of family owned small grocery chains in my area that are booming and doing just fine against the bigger guys in the extremely competitive and cutthroat business they're in. They do what they do better than the others - better quality, better selection, better service - and people go there for that reason. (for you Bay Area people, I'm thinking of Lunardi's). Smaller ones that are only "me-toos" go away. We're all better off for it. I only know of one local wine store (it's in Costa Mesa, with the unfortunate name of Hi-Time Wines) that's as dazzling an experience as Total Wine. Not as big but with a phenomenal selection and knowledgable staff to help. That store will always be around, for the reasons mentioned....See Moremxk3 z5b_MI
