I would be tempted to try a black door to jibe with the shutters and also paint the garage doors black (but would prob want to photoshop that first to make sure...)

Funny. We painted our house Mozart Blue a few years ago. Your house definitely looks brighter than ours though. Local light must be different. I think a pale yellow door would be lovely, or a coral. If you really want to tone down, go with a white door, for an overall crisp blue & white look, and consider painting the shutters white as well.

I like the red you have now, it ties in with the chimney. I like the no-shutter look with blue and red:

I think a white door and shutters would help balance things out Right now the bright white garage doors are grabbing focus. No shutters on this house but the Mozart Blue, white trim and white garage are nice.

Think about painting your downspouts the same blue as the siding to make them disappear.

You could still go with another color for the door. Check Ben Moore's site for suggestions with Mozart Blue. Maybe Heaven On Earth...? IDK, I kind of like the white.

If you want to tone down your house, don’t pick cherry red, tangerine, lemon, marigold, or fuschia.

I like the blue. I think it is just new to you, and different from what you had. I would go for a black door, with your shutters, and I also agree, with the garage doors also being black.

@Kim H, I like the green much better than the other 3 colors they show…Baked Cumin, Muslin and Swiss Coffee. Swiss Coffee can read fairly light on the exterior. We’ve used it for both the interior and exterior, and it can look pretty white on the exterior.

I like your current red front door, and it also ties in with the brick chimney; it all looks great, imo.

And I don’t think you need shutters. I really think the house is better without them.

If you want toned down, but still with a bit of personality - I suggest a chartreuse color for the door (no shutters).

I prefer the black.

Black is my preference for all the places you mentioned, including garage doors. Hit those white downspouts with the blue so they don't outline and box in your house.

Love the chartreuse…you might consider some color on the soffits…goes with the distinctive linear lines of the home ….shutters don’t seem right on this style house…a shot of color on the garage doors would be a good effect also as the driveway is not a good aesthetic…if it is concrete i would consider staining it…if that works the steps and landing could also be stained to match…in fact i might work on the driveway first as that may lead to different color ideas on the trims…the theory being ….fix the eyesore first

Bring a light gray/taupe color from the stones on the stairs up onto the door, and paint the garage doors the same. Get a pretty welcome mat, and a big planter for the corner to the right of the door. I would also beef up the railings along the driveway wall and up the stairs. They are a bit waifish compared to your bold house. It’s lovely, don’t panic. 🙂

To tone down blue, reduce contrast. Try light wood tones. Add planters and porch pot. Add house number near door. Something like this. Inspiration photos.

Thank you all very much for your input - especially those who went to the effort of making "renderings," how kind of you. Those were very useful, and helped me to realize that black is the right option, given my general risk-adverseness. The shutters and front door will be SW Tricorn Black. I'll post a pic when everything is done.

I never even thought of painting the garage doors but you guys are right, I think black would look really good. We're not going to have the painters do it (given they JUST painted them white) but that seems like a job my husband and I can easily tackle ourselves down the line.
