Minwax stains for red oak

Help please! I cannot decide on which minwax stain to use on our new build red oak Hardwoods! They are thru out the house and I don't want anything that looks red or yellow! I was thinking English chestnut, but now it looks red to me!

The best practice is to see samples in your space with your lighting. This includes the stain and the topcoat.

In a new build, that can be difficult.

Also, Minwax is not generally considered the best product to use, so that may be something to think about.....

Hopefully they are just asking you to choose from Minwax colors but they're going to use a different product when they do the work. We just finished a railing with Miniwax Chestnut (not English Chestnut) on red oak that looks medium brown. It doesn't look very red to me, if at all. It is a warm brown, but I wouldn't say it's yellow either. Jacobean and Provincial are other Minwax colors that are popular with people on this forum.

Okay so if anyone wants to see an example of the Bona Traffic Semi-Gloss finish, here you go: I read a lot of posts here before choosing the finish and it seems Satin was the overwhelming popular choice. But, I love the semi gloss! It's not too shiny at all. I could've even gone more shiny. I like when the reflections from the windows are sharp rectangles, not fuzzy blobs, haha.

I did not use it on my floor, but I did use it on my front door, which may or may not help:My floor is oak, and we have not changed the finish. The door is mahogany instead of oak, and so it may take the stain differently. I could show you a photo of the exterior of the door, but it is a slightly different color because we put a different stain on that side first and then tried to remove it because it was too red, and while we did remove most of the stain, there was a slight residue that makes it slightly different from the interior side. No one has really noticed until I tell them, however.

Minwax has a colour called gunstock I think. That is a nice brown on oak floors. I think ours may have been white oak but it was a pleasing mid brown that made the grain in the oak look really beautiful. I think I would stay away from the grey flooring trend unless you can find a very light grey that work well for you. Gorgeous kitchen you've got going there. Please post photos as you progress through the project. Looks like its going to be gorgeous. I especially like the upper cabinets with the square glass doors. Did you wire those to have lights in them? If not, now is the time.

You might also look at Early American on your floor. I thought your choices were both pretty dark when we did our floors, but we have a lot of shade outside. Our refinishers mixed as suggested above with 1/2 E.A. & 1/2 Puritan Pine. We liked the yellow in P.P. which lightened the floor. E.A. is more mid brown.

I'm redoing my red oak floors and using Duraseal Dark Walnut with a little Ebony to try to get the red out..

Your dark walnut and ebony mix is the same as Jacobean.

Jacobean has greem undertones but dark walnut with ebony is a bit warmer
