Comments (4)I have a GT loop system too. Huge pit - 120' x 48' x 6'. I will not plant any large trees on that pit. If they ever need to repair a leak - they would get in the way. And yes - they apparently can isolate which loop is leaking and fix it.. You can plant grass, shrubs, small trees, etc.. Just don't put something like a big silver maple on top of the pit....See MoreGeothermal new construction question
Comments (1)Also, they are saying 100' of tubing per ton of system size, so we'd be at 700' of length. Does that sound reasonable?...See Moreadvice on geothermal in idaho
Comments (11)Lazydm, Hello. I have limited experience with Climatemaster in a comparable (?) climate to yours (Missoula, MT.) Here are my observations. In November of last year we had a 3 ton Tranquility 27 installed to heat our underinsulated, 1200 sq. ft. stucco house. Our installation depended on a well pump to provide the water ("Open loop system"). The system, except for a problem with the well pump, since resolved, and a failed thermostat, since resolved, has worked quite well. IT IS NOT as cleap to use as we had expected, because the cost of running the well pump has eaten up some of the efficiency of the system. However, it does cost us about 25% less to heat our home than it did when we were using natural gas. Plus, we now irrigate much more cheaply, and we have air conditioning where we did not before. Your system, if properly sized and installed, should provide good results for you. The closed loop system is really very efficient, and the heat pump idea works. I hope the trenches are deep enough and properly sized to the heat pump; that is an area where an inexperienced person might be tempted to cut corners. Areas where things might go wrong: Well, the unit can be noisy. It needs to be set on a sound absorbing pad; the unit is shipped with metal brackets that must be removed during installation. There are four of them, and techs overlook the two in the back sometimes. They interfere with the damping of the system and if left on can cause premature unit failure. Also, in our unit I was unhappy with the appearance of the metal tubing in the unit. It was evident to me that it had been clumsily brazed and I know that can weaken the walls of the pipe. I would insist on a visual inspection and consider the options if a qualified person agreed that the unit had been poorly assembled. (Climatemaster built a new plan recently, I was told, and it is not unlikely that some of the workforce is still learning ... at the same time demand is high and they must be under pressure to get units out. The desuperheater, while it may not supply all of your hot water, will sure supply a big chunk of it. I am not a tech and even if I were I don't know the conditions in your area, but I would suspect that those trenches need to be close to five feet deep and three or four feet wide. (The way they lay the pipe -black plastic stuff- around here is to "slinky" it out, so the trench needs to be made wide enough for the coils. If they used a straight pipe the trenches could be narrower, but they'd need to be much longer. I don't know how they do it there. Maybe it depends on the soil.) Good luck, and I hope you keep us posted. And, I do have to say, the people who install those units here have a lot of experience and are easy to work with- they might be work a phone call if you have further questions. Comments (4)Theres always Vodka, but then you will need an exemption from the Fire Marshal. No, hydronic antifreeze would be most cost effective, but I have heard about biodegradable antifreeze hitting the solar markets because of being "green" Try a search for "corn glycol" I have no first hand knowledge of the stuff...See MoreCharles Ross Homes
