Hosta Identification
Comments (11)My vote is for Holy Mole. I'll try to get a picture of mine this morning, and hope the 11 inches of rain has not beat the garden down. The neighbor said her 5 gallon bucket had 13 inches of water in it, her friend in Pensacola had 17 inches in hers (although they say Pensacola got 20 inches of rain, with 5.5 inches coming down in 45 minutes)... I notice that some of my hosta leaves have sort of bruises on them, which I estimate came from the sheer force and impact of raindrops. Here is the Avocado leaf. It is much too plain in the middle to be the plant in question. That twig went through the leaf last night. Cathedral Windows another candidate. Of course my plant is not mature and the center may change. But I see it as more golden in the midleaf than the greener in the example. Holy Mole has a touch more of the green in midleaf, which is why I submit it is the plant in question. To me, the clue of the midleaf color was that large chartreuse leafed shrub next to the hosta. The hosta was matched with that shrub for effect. Emerald Charger is another fragrant with that kind of midleaf variegation. However, it has twisted leaves which I don't think the example mature hosta has. It is the one at the bottom of the picture beneath. . I think you could get Holy Mole, Cathedral Windows, and perhaps Emerald Charger and be in good shape. Nothing like having all three! They are beautiful hosta...See MoreFragrant Bouquet Family aka Holy Mole we got Guacamole
Comments (6)Ah yes!! One of my favorite extended families! I have one that looks a lot like them, but not sure it is part of the family.....Emerald Charger.....and I'll tack its photo onto the bottom. Hold on to your hat, I have 11 of them Fragrant Bouquet Fragrant Dream Guacamole , and The Shining (Cathedral Windows sport) Sweet Innocence, very recent addition Avocado was a bonus plant, perfect choice for me Fried Bananas, one of my favorites Fried Green Tomatoes Holy Mole, another bonus plant and I am pleased with it too Stained Glass The Shining (Cathedral Windows sport) Fragrant King And here is the Emerald Charger, which I got from Bob Solberg. For some reason, I feel it looks a lot like some of this family....but cannot find at this moment what I read about it. Anyway, hope Steve_Mass sees it for his question about Cathedral Windows.......See MoreHostas Reverting
Comments (26)Not hard to get green or gold, since I don't know what value you place on this clump I'll look at as if it were mine. Dig the whole damned thing and start to divide carefully looking to find the eye that has the variegation. Try to separate that eye and pot so you can watch it and remove any solid colors. The one variegated leaf looks like it has lighter color on each side of the center stem so it should come back if you can separate it. If there is only one leaf on that eye then we can talk about "Zumberizing" it to get that leaf coloration only. Now back to the remainder, you have a group of greenÂs and goldÂs decide what you want and compost the rest. IÂve done this and it is just fun to find out what happens. The worse is youÂll lose this leaf but you will still have all the green and gold you can use....See MoreA sport of, a 'niece of', lineage...
Comments (4)Closest I think would be the Sports section(link below) at the site Ken mentioned. If you select say Guacamole it shows sports and sports of sports of Guacamole (23); and at top shows parent that Guacamole sported from - Fragrant Bouquet. Select Fragrant Bouquet from list and you see some of other kin(38), etc... Won't show you seedlings. Thought if you click MyHosta at the top and then click Hosta Search - select Origin in field to search and type in fragrant bouquet it shows 26 listings and some of these are hybrids and (x)crosses(seedlings). paste this for searching database- http://myhostas.be/db/info_search.php Paul Here is a link that might be useful: MyHostas: Hosta Sports...See Moresweet_betsy No AL Z7
