Frigidaire top-freezer fridge can't stay cold in hot weather

drlegendre
last year

I have a Frigidaire top-freezer unit that's about 5 years old. It's just a basic oldschool electromechanical unit, no digital / electronic controls. We had a blast of hot, himid weather and the fridge section warmed to 60F while the freezer stayed down near 0F.

Sounds like it's iced up, right?

So I attached an ammeter to the AC line and forced the defrost timer into a defrost cycle.. and there was no defrost action. The ammeter confirmed that the defrost heater was not running, only 70mA drawn in defrost (about enough for just the timer itself).

It seems that the defrost circuit is open, eh? So what is the most likely culprit? The only options are: defrost thermostat, defrost element or defrost timer (switch contacts).

So which one likes to go out on these models? Am I on track, here?

Thanks!
