Is anyone interested in a spring plant swap?
Comments (21)I live in Wappingers Falls and I went to a plant swap in CT last spring. I would love to have a plant swap in Dutchess County, with the cost of gas these days! I've got lots of campanula, gaillardia and some asters to swap. Probably more things as time goes on. If there is a Dutchess County swap, please give details. The one I went to in CT was very casual -- people came and put their plants to swap on tables. Everyone browsed for awhile and took what they wanted. It was hosted by a nursery, who provided meats (hamburgs and hot dogs) and buns. Everyone else brought side dishes and desserts. It was so fun and relaxing. I've seen other plant swaps listed where they have "rounds" where you pick a certain amount of plants, depending on how many you bring. I think it would work either way; I really enjoyed the one I went to, though, because it didn't feel like any "plant police," it was just fellow plant lovers trading away their extras with no strings attached....See Morenew: november 2015 obf members season of sharing
Comments (150)Hey everyone! Wow! So much going on here!! Sorry haven't checked in the last few days. Sorry I missed Bingo, been just crazy here. I'll start getting my seeds together to mail :) Here are a couple of recipes I love... RECIPE 1: Lazy Pigs ~1 small to med. cabbage ~1lb hamburger ~2 cans tomato soup ~2 med. onions ~2 cups brown rice Core cabbage, and cut into small pieces. Wash, set aside. Brown 1lb hamburger, reserving drippings to cook diced onions. Cook brown rice according to directions. In a large skillet (I use cast iron) combine cabbage, hamburger, onion, rice and 2 cans of tomato soup. Mix well. Add enough water to cover the top of your mixture. Cook 350, for about 1 1/2 hours. If you wanted to make this quicker, I cook the cabbage on top of the stove for about 20 minutes. Reserving the cabbage liquid to mix with some of my tomato soup. Mix everything together and cook 350degrees for 35minutes. Salt and pepper to taste :) RECIPE 2: Ham and Cheese Roll ~1 pound of ham; Sliced or cubed ~8 oz. of Havarti Cheese with dill, cubed small ~Your easiest dough recipe. Some times I've even used those flaky biscuit tubes (Grands, you need 2 tubes) ~ 1/2 cup peach jam ~ 2 Tbsp. mustard Roll your dough as normal. Like making a pizza. Or place your biscuits together in a 13x9 pan making sure their is no holes in the bottom. Place ham and cheese randomly over your dough bottom. In a bowl mix jam and mustard together using a small whisk. Pour over the ham and cheese, and spread evenly over the dough. Now you can either roll your dough like a stromboli, or if your using biscuits, open the second can and place over the ham and cheese mixture. Bake at 375. For actual rolled dough cook for about 30 minutes. For biscuits cook for about 20 minutes. They will both be golden brown on top. Yummy :) Have a great night!!...See MoreAnyone doing special food for St Pat's Day?
Comments (26)I'm corning our own flat cut brisket this year-- used a recipe from Bob Appetit-- the brine contains Lager-- it's brined for a total of eight days-- will be interesting to see if it's as good as Dad's old corning recipe. Also planning to do a Beer Cake-- it's originally a German recipe but hey if it's got beer it COULD be Irish. Home Cookin Chapter: Heirlooms , Traditional & Ethnic Gugelhupf Bierkuchen (German Beer Cake) ======================================= 1 cup molasses 1/2 cup butter at room temperature 1 (12 ounce) bottle beer 1 cup raisins, plumped and dried 2-2/3 cups sifted all-purpose flour 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 tablespoon baking powder (double action) 1/4 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon EACH, ground cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger (I use 1 teaspoon cinnamon) 1 cup coarsely chopped pecans or filberts, toasted Glaze (see recipe below) . Instructions: Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C). Grease and flour a 9 or 10-inch tube, bundt or gugelhupf (sometimes spelled Kugelhopf) pan. Combine the molasses, butter, and beer in a saucepan and heat only until the butter melts. Stir in the raisins or currants and let the mixture cool for 15 minutes. Sift together the dry ingredients. Stir in the nuts. Pour the cooled beer mixture over the dry ingredients and stir until smooth. Pour the batter into prepared pan. Bake in preheated 350° F (180°C) oven for 45 60 minutes (I check at 45 minutes, mine took 50 minutes). Remove from oven and let stand for 15 minutes before turning out on a wire rack. Let cake cool a bit before drizzling glaze over it. GLAZE: Mix 1 cup icing sugar and enough maple syrup (or liquid honey) to moisten the icing sugar to the drizzling stage. Pour glaze over the top of the cake and let it run down the sides....See MoreI just became a vegetarian.
Comments (87)We have Schwan's here too. I've gotten ice cream from them, the girls loved it. I also bought blue hake filets that were very nice. I've not had any of their prepared items. They come in clearly marked trucks with brochures, not in pick up trucks with freezers strapped to the back. And how the heck can they RUN a freezer strapped to the bed of a pick up anyway? I also open my door to the girl scout cookie sales, the boy scout soft drink can drives, the football team selling discount cards, the cheerleaders selling candy bars. I donate to local charities that I choose. As many know, I work for the Prosecuting Attorney's Office here. I live in a small town in a rural agricultural county with a relatively low crime rate. Everyone knows everyone else, mostly. However, there are assaults and rapes and murders and breaking and enterings all the time. I see the victims personally and I can tell you that I'm really sorry for those who are making a living going door to door, it's dangerous for them too. As a result I take some reasonable precautions. I don't let strangers in my house, I don't pick up hitchhikers and I don't buy products sold door to door by strangers in unmarked vehicles. Ever. Everyone else gets to do as they wish, take whatever chances they are comfortable with. Annie...See MoreAnnie Deighnaugh
