Paint Design Dilemma Exterior

Colors to go with pink brick and warm stone

Hello all! I built a new home in 2020 when materials were out of stock. I ended up with a combination of brick and stone on the front that don't exactly match. I know it's a challenge but I need advice on choosing a siding and shutter color to go with the brick and stone. Originally I used "Buckskin" siding with black shutters. Currently, I tried to change the siding to a blue/gray between the brick and stone. I'm looking for siding and shutter colors that will compliment the brick and stone, and also look ok against the Buckskin on the back. I would also paint the garage side to match the front so the brick would sort of be in between. Thank you ahead of time for your help and ideas!!

Hmm. It’s a very nice house. I do kind of think you went one or two bridges too far with textures and materials. I’d try to neutralize the brick by painting it and the siding all the same. I’d do darker than Buckskin. Maybe that blue you’ve got, or a charcoal color. Is that what is in the porch area? I’d also remove the delicate trim stuff at the roof pitches. Too fussy.

The blue is Sherwin Williams "Distance" and has a red tone like gray/purple. it is in the porch wall and the roof line strip of siding by the porch. My thinking was to continue it around the garage side (see bottom picture) and maybe change the shutters to a beige or cream, which would be on the porch windows as well. What are your thoughts on that?

Was not suggesting you clad the brick at all -- just paint it, which is relatively cheap. My other suggestion was to eliminate one of the siding choices on the front (Thereby saving some $). In so much as I can see the right colors better on my monitor and it appears that you like blue, my opinion was that w/the absence of the yellow brick you the darker of the blues would work w/the stone. My comment about the timber ark was related to the question you asked of me earlier when on my iPad it looked as though you had posted brown (timberbark), white, and gray -- thus illustrating the point I attempted to make earlier about the distortion of color in this medium. I don’t think your house is ugly. Here are a few greys. But a truly sophisticated way of creating a harmonious palette for your exterior would be to measure samples of your brick and roof tile colours. (This is possible with a tiny device which connects wirelessly to your phone.) A little like capturing a photo on your phone, but it provides details of the coloured surface. We can use the details to know in which Hue Family the bricks belong and where within that family they sit. Powerful stuff when trying to partner them with harmonising paint colours. Other than that, all suggestions are guesswork when looking via photographs.

Odd that your lantern lights at the front door are not mounted at the same height. I would correct that. New ones should be 1/3 the door's height. You might consider picking a darker gray from the stone and painting the brick that color to unify the house. You should be able to find a brick that is close enough in style to replace the medallions before you paint it all one color. Check out Romabio for new high tech masonry paints and washes with less maintenance. Once the body of the house is gray, the white trim will be ideal. What are you thinking regarding landscaping? I would certainly remove those two tall bushy shrubs in front.

Similar to Emily's suggestion above I would start out with trim colors that are more similar to the hue your brick. You can either match one of the colors in the brick or go a little darker or lighter. This will give your house a consistent look that I feel will most likely subdue the red undertone. Contrasts have a good chance of playing up the red tones in the brick. The raw yellow color of the trim is showing you this right now. Going more gray or cool than the brick will likely do the same thing, playing up rather than playing down the pink undertones. A green might work by theory of complimentary colors, but you would need to try out a few to see what happens.

While the blue is a pretty color, it isn't in the siding of the stone or the brick. I would go with a gray. I picked the gray from the stone mortar. It is on top in the image below and found grays and neutrals that I like and think would work to tie both sides of the house together.

I really like the brick and I really like the stone. The paint has to be more neutral.

I like Black Pepper the best and I think Blue Spruce is a dramatic contender. Fieldstone is beigey. Horizon Gray is on my house. It has a green undertone. Of course, you have to sample these. All the colors I've looked at are Benjamin Moore. I like your shutters black!

I agree that a gray from the stone would serve as a MUCH BETTER bridge between stone and brick.... which really arent THAT far off - looks like some pinky-beigey tones in the stone.... and some slight gray tinges in the brick. That vivid blue is what's out of place. I would go with a more substantial, darker gray such as the Black Pepper above, not anything too light. Dark colors recede, light colors come forward.

Ah. That blue as you describe isn’t going to work well then. In that case, I’d go with a warm charcoal color.
