Painter comes next week, desperately need exterior paint color help
Would love advice on a color scheme to modernize my house that will look good with the light stone and cedar shake shingles. I have been considering SW Iron Ore (dark charcoal) but I am worried it might look way too dark. I can’t even decide if i should go with a light or dark color palette at this point. I live in Park City, UT so would like the look to fit with a mountain contemporary vibe.

last yearlast modified: last yearYour home is lovely and agree the colors can make it even better. In your example pictures all the houses have a unifying color scheme. Your home has quite a few colors and textures. I think the white windows are hard to work with here. The sage ? green garage door color, the medium brown shake color, the dark gray? siding, the natural wood awning over the garage, the multi color stone... I would pick a color from the stone to help tie everything together and reduce the visual clutter. I picked an olive khaki from the stone here:

Comments (76)Wow, I hadn't realized there were other replies after I posted a couple wks ago. I only came back to check now to rehash my decision. Because no...I still don't know what I'm doing :( I'm literally past obsessing about it. And moved on to being plain, ol' DEPRESSED over it. So much so, that I booked a flight to CA for Feb 26th, so I could go to Ikea and just waste some money on accesories. And NOT paint! At the time, I decided to just put glass in the doors, open up the other couple. Try to find something I really liked to go over the cabs. Nice rug, some under cabinet lighting, and call it a day. But, dh and everyone else knows that would only make me happy for about a wk. So, we're painting. What color? Well, we'll decide that when the guy comes for the doors :( Seriously, I'm just going to flip a coin. Last night I was set on all white. Figured adding some other color in a rug, painting the inside of the glass cabinets green, and adding other stuff wouldn't make it look so sterile. But, that darn floor and the white appliances keep staring at me. I could happily do white cabs if appliances were SS. OR..if the floor was wood. But, having both things against me. I've yet to EVER clip and save a kitchen with light tile, and white appliances. There's a reason for that. I don't like the look ! The black..sigh. I love black. But, since my first post I've changed out my living room quite a bit. It's taking on a lighter tone. And I worry the black is too heavy with it. I've had visions again of going green/gray on the bottom. Dh doesn't want to for resale. And because of how he thinks it'd look against the Lenox Tan paint on the walls. Blue, I love the color you've done! I can totally see doing something like that to work WITH what I have. Not against it. But, again..the paint throughout the whole space would be hard to work with. Dh suggested maybe going with the wall color, at half strength..for the lowers. White uppers. OR..back to black lowers. It's quite obvious I'm all over the map still. And am thankful for all the snow. So, my painter can't get started yet :( Here's my living room. Right off the kitchen. I need to make things flow. Comments (29)Squirrelheaven- Could I ask one more favor? We would love to see the caramel color one (the last one that we loved) with the arch and columns done in the house body color. We are not sure how much more it will cost us to have the painters paint it a different color since it is stucco too. I need to see if I love the arch and columns in the trim color enough to pay extra for it! As far as the garage doors go...Well, I could see how much a kidney is going for on the black market to be able to afford those garage doors! On the other hand I am awfully fond of my kidneys so I think that I will stick with the doors and trim painted the house color. On a happy note, I talked DH into thinning out that tree today and while I still don't like it, it is infinitely better than before. A lot of the tree was dead and some had some bizarre looking mold on it so maybe it will die and then I can get what I want! I love the black trellises Squirrel added and am dying to try something like that. Newhomebuilder- It is not synthetic stucco and the painters will be using elastomeric paint. last yearI'd like to see an even lighter color photoshopped on your house. For me there is still too much contrast with the greenish gray. Something closer to the Felted Wool shown above, although it looks like the color needs to be warmer to go with the stone. Maybe BM Grant Beige.

last yearI thought about pulling one of the lighter colors from the stone, but it felt like it took away from the stone and the shake and brought more attention to the garage and siding than the shake and stone. It felt like the front door disappeared.

last yearlast modified: last yearI was inspired to do your house by the Brick & Batten house which is done in SW Iron Ore (bottom right). Windows are painted black... I find it quite nice, makes the shingles and stone really stand out!
Note: your garage doors have windows so would look even nicer!

last yearlast modified: last yearYour light gray colors are the wrong tone. the ones you have listed lean a little pink/taupe. your stone is more tan/golden. if you go w/something too light, it's going to look washed out.
these are the tones of your stone.
This evergreen fog color would look great w/your shake and the stone. I love this color on your garage doors (so some other sage green color) if you want light, try the neutral ground on the siding w/the tan shade on the trim. or vice versa.
darker grays that have that green/brown undertone. all of these pair well w/the stone.
I love the black w/the wood idea. Iron Ore or Wrought Iron.no cedar shake, but this has the stone facade w/the dark colors and trim so you get an idea. Your cedar would actually lend a lot of warmth to the party.
if you want a little warmer, what about these? (Copper Mountain on the front door) Caramelized on the trim, the bronze on the siding.
Urbane Bronze is another nice color for the siding. either of the two light ones for the trim/garage door,,,Cajun for the front door.
Any of these Protege Bronze, Urbane Bronze, Nettle or Nocturne will give that dark shade, but since they all have brown undertones, will work well w/the stone and the cedar.Some other neutral tones.
