Shutters vs no shutters vs Juliet balcony?
Comments (14)Like bp, I know you didn't ask but I personally think you could simplify the house and have it look even more elegant. Overall it's a beautiful house but right now it feels a bit "cluttered". There are a lot of extra elements going on that really add nothing to the beauty of this house. Personally I feel siding would be so wrong for the style of this house. I would do stone and stucco. I removed that second gable that bp said looks like it's photobombing the house. I also changed the top window over the garage to a straight top and not arched. You already have the three arched windows on the main part of the house. I didn't do it, but I'd probably make that window a bit smaller too. It looks too large for the peak there. I removed the stone on either side of the house and left that just stucco. What this does is now the main focus of the house has the stone and stucco so your eye is visually led to the front of the house and the front door. This also removes many of the horizontal lines that are cluttering up the look of the house On the right side wall next to the door, I pulled the stonework up higher so you now don't have competing horizontal lines. I got rid of the copper roof over the windows on the garage. Why bring focus to that and not your front door? I also made the window the same size as the other main windows on the front of the house. I believe by making these changes, your eye now focuses on the front porch and the front door so that you're "welcoming" people to your house....See MoreSlightly Narrower (than window) Exterior Shutters?
Comments (15)For the record, yes, the shutters should be proportionate to the window size- here's my original drawing of the house with that in mind. However, I'm long past being "over" the fact that the shutters on the lower windows aren't quite as wide as the windows. I understand the "purist" argument- but face it, not everything gets translated perfectly into the final product because of budgets, product choices, etc. The issue here was the choice of standard composite shutters vs. custom wood shutters, and choices in between. The owners here chose the composite shutters that will keep paint and last much longer than the traditional wood ones, the drawback being that at the time they couldn't find 3'4" wide shutters in that product. I don't blame them, and frankly, hardly anyone really notices on this particular house. Although I would conceptually opt for the proportional shutters, there are many factors. I've seen hundreds of eclectic houses that don't have the right size shutters, and they weren't that way when the house was built! We put mullions in windows when we don't really "need" them any more....there's any number of these issues in Traditional home design, and there's much "fakery" that goes on in "Modern" design as well! I really like the way the Ivy Road house turned out- and it's really been one of my most "posted" and "shared" houses on Social Media, so I believe other people like the way it looks as well....See MoreShutter Style Dilemma
Comments (18)Yes that is the listing photo of my house. It just has red shutters now as shown in the picture below. But I’m not a big fan of the big red...so I’m interested in getting other ideas to elevate the curb appeal....See MoreHunter Douglass shutters vs Norman?
