Missing bluebird female

We have fledglings - probably by the end of the week theyll be flying out and all of a sudden mom has disappeared. Dad of this pair has always been more visible and seems to take on a lot of the feeding role more than mom who seems to spend a lot of time hiding in a back tree in the yard. Do female bluebirds ever abandon fledglings and a mate or could she have fallen victim to something?

Thanks for the reminder Ray. While we never let our cat outdoors, a lot of the neighbors do. I have a good sized (8") wobbling stovepipe guard and have never had a cat, raccoon, or snake get into one of my boxes. The conduit pipe and good guard are extremely important.

Oh, how sad. Of course you are distressed. I believe you are saying all the eggs are still in the boxes? Do you have sparrow spookers up on the boxes? The only thing I can think of that would kill all 3 bluebirds, but not eat them would be house sparrows. Are you seeing any house sparrows now trying to use the boxes?

No, the male can not incubate and brood the babies. They can take care of them once they are about a week old. Do you have cats? Check the nest for eggs. If there are eggs put a small dot on one with a marker then check to see if it has been moved. You want to be sure it was YOUR bird that you found the remains of.
