What size artwork over fireplace mantel
Help! I want to purchase a statement piece of art to go over the fireplace mantel, I just don't know what size. The width of the fireplace & mantel is 63" and the ceiling height is 17'. I want something that will pop but not look grossly oversized. (pls ignore what is on the mantel now)
In this pic below i put up some cardboard to help me visualize a good size. The width of this cardboard is 42" and the height at the tape measure is 42".... Too big? too small???
I want a landscape painting, which lends itself to the "landscape" orientation, not "portrait"... and I'm thinking a taller painting will be more favorable with the group. Hoping you can help me get something that will look the right size for the space.

Comments (18)Too high, too small ; I agree with all of the above. Above the mantle is prime space/location, you shouldn't have to merchandise around the picture to make it look right. I disagree with adding more matting, possibly you should look for a print that can be framed with all of the image showing, this particular print looks like the matting is hiding some of the picture by cutting off parts of the trees, not too effective, imo. I can give you a physical description of the fireplace and wall. The fireplace is centered on the wall with a window on each side. Comments (19)Thanks everyone. I agree on the drapes, they came with the house - don’t love them. But the in addition to the two windows on each side of the fire place there there is a very large window on the walls to right and the left. So this will be quite an expense that I was trying to avoid. But definitely an option and would do in a similar way as @BeverlyFLADeziner suggests. I also agree with a chunkier mantel, however the mantel replacement will require additional stone work, so unless I can modify what I have, vs. replace it - that is not an option. I will definitely keep my eyes open for Art, you have sent some great suggestions that I like a lot. Comments (1)What is the scale of the room and the wall and the bed against the wall. Its such a vague question without any scale or pictures for comparison. So difficult to judge what size the artwork should be.. maybe post the pictures of the room and the wall in question will help you get better suggestions.....See Morejck910

last yearAbout the width of the firebox is good. I gave you a NY Harbor landscape, I centered it over the top shelf and then between the two top shelves. I like the higher placement better. I think you want to arrange so the piece is not lower than items on the shelves.

last yearSee the pics below for built-in styling. I’d try to keep it pretty simple. The smaller prints should go on a lower shelf to not compete with the print you hang on the fireplace. If they won’t fit on a lower shelf, try them somewhere else in the room/house on a wall. I think you want to avoid the visual of squares of art lined up like soldiers from left shelf to fireplace to right shelf.
