Painting exterior brick white

Hi -

my husband is painting our exterior white. would love to paint the garage door, door and window trim balck. just wondering if people have other ideas that would look nice. Also, the stairs is a concert slab - any ideas to make it more appealing?

I would consider treating the concrete with a stain color that you like ….and once that dries….paint the garage door to match…this will connect the stairs to the door ….creating an interesting graphic…and a nice separation from the connecting houses

I think you can paint the garage door, the front door, and the steps a light blue. Like this. Use paint formulated for concrete add grit to it so it isn't slippery.

One of the greatest cautions to painting brick is that the paint, if not carefully selected can trap water and moisture in the wall assembly, causing deterioration to the brick and mortar and adjacent wall construction. This is especially true for historic and older structures where softer bricks and mortar, solid masonry construction, or veneer walls without modern cavity detailing and weeps, where paint could drastically and negatively effect the wall system. Similarly a wall that is showing signs of deterioration should not be painted as that means that water is already getting into the wall and can be trapped further with paint. The hardness of modern bricks, mortars, and cavity wall detailing has made this less of an issue in new construction, but it is still something of which everyone should be aware. It's something that would be worth discussing with the brick and paint manufacturers to make sure that the two are a good match both for durability and for maintaining the appropriate level of breathability.

Seems a shame to paint that brick. Maybe one of the photoshop gurus can do a mockup for you of some color options. I'm no expert, but this seems craftsman-esque, which are always so rich in color and contrast. Good luck with your decision.

Mineral paint technology like Romabio and PermaTint has been used for HUNDREDS of years in Europe on all types of masonry. Tons of info available about this, it's an easy Google so you can get the facts and decide for yourself. Painting brick is a maintenance nightmare only for people who don't know to do it right. I agree. Paint it. The house is not attractive as is. The mix of stone and brick is weird. This house is the result of someone trying to get cute with materials - that never ends well. I *might* try leaving the vertical brick trim as is just to see how it looks because it is well done. You can always paint it later. In general, however, you can get a bucket of Romabio, apply it to a section of the house and if you like it, then leave it and keep going. One color could make the mix of textures more attractive, interesting. If you don't like it, hose it off. It's mineral paint so you can do that. Read and follow the directions to a "T".

Did you leave the column like that on purpose, or did you paint it black? It just sticks out, and looks disjointed. I think by leaving a few of the darker bricks exposed, you've made it look like the house has freckles. Like everything, there's likes and dislikes. I personally don't like freckles on men, because my sister had them and I found them feminine. However, there are other people like my sister, who sought out men with freckles and found them attractive. So, it's whatever makes you happy. It does add some texture.. This was a big change, and I personally would have covered them all. I am glad you got away from the red brick, which I find very boring. Again, this is just my opinion and you know what they say about those.. Everyone has one..

You need a canopy above your door. It will keep the weather off the door, keep your guests dry & dress up the front door. I would do a black front door with large 3D numbers for your address.

Paint the garage door and it’s trim the house white- no need to make that a feature. The front of the stairs can also be white. Black trim, black handrail, and black or colorful door, your choice. I would find a pretty tile for the steps as a fun little surprise.

And I agree, yo need a door canopy of some sort. Maybe copper?

This is a duplex I assume how did the neighbors feel about you doing this to the brick? Take a pic from further back so we can see the whole building. Yes you need a door awning and no not copper If doing the window trim black then a nice black metal and glass awning will be good .I would change the garage door to one with some glass and in black steel As for the stairs never paint concrete it will look like s--t in no time nice big black house numbers and a new light fixture in black too. The concrete might be able to be stained black but be aware those steps will always look dirty maybe something like this for the treads on those stairs and stain the concrete black and add a nice white trellis on the big wall of concrete

In my sketch, I show a black awning (ready to install on Amazon). Your door can be any colour, maybe choose one that goes with your interior decor? For the stairs you can install a natural fiber runner (available in hardware stores). Perhaps tall grasses along the ciment wall would do the trick. Your windows look fairly new on your photo so I left them white, and althouth I do like black windows, somehow I don't really see them on your house.

Note: there's a grey box on the right side of the door. Is that a vent or a sconce? If it's a vent, I would paint it white like the brick, seems to stand out. I also show a black sconce and large address numbers.

I like the number idea as well… but they could be bigger and installed vertically…using a simple but good sized vertical light on the right

Since the garage door is so prominent, I would consider replacing it with something that looks really nice and coordinates with the entry.

Numbers that are mounted vertically are harder for some to decipher and are typically a Modern solution for MCM & Artdeco homes styles.
