Update for Elliott's Aunties and Uncles

Elliott had his dental surgery yesterday. He was the ONLY surgery scheduled for the day.

They did a full-mouth x-ray prior.

His blood pressure dropped quite a bit while under, so they ran a constant infusion of meds to bring it up and keep it stable.

They removed 8 teeth on the top and 2 molars. They were very diseased, and some were loose, and 1 was fractured!!! He must have been in absolute agony. We know what it's like to have a broken tooth. Poor boy.

The technician met with me when I first brought him in and explained the procedure and I signed the forms. She was asking me some health questions and I told her I had no idea; I've only had him since March.. I told her that he has a large extended family rooting for him and described how I got him and the subsequent issue. She thought he looked really handsome in his crate, and I told her to wait till she takes him out of it then! LOL.

When she called to update me she asked if she could be an Aunty too. Hahaha. She loved him.

He came home at 5, not to jump up, do stairs, keep quiet etc. He was wobbly of course, but he didn't want to sleep for some reason. He just sat beside me while I was working. I put him on his cushion but he wanted down. Every other single evening he's zonked there.

This morning I heard some noise and he was in the hall buzzing in circles chasing his tail. I burst out laughing; he's obviously feeling better.

He still isn't eating worth a darn. Way too fussy, and he has to eat in order to get his pills. I got some goop to wrap the pills in, most cats like it. Not him. I also got some powder to dissolve in his drinking water which is to help with gingivitis, tartar etc.

So he's happy to be home, got a good brushing and thank you for being his beloved family.

Thanks for the positive comments, brom friends. Glad you enjoyed it - just sorry you weren't all there. LOL, Andrew, that 100% pay rise sounds good, but my maths is poor - what is 100% of $0? The alien hieroglyphics were most annoying. I now know that one should change the file to text only, when copying and pasting a Word document. The hieroglyphics substituted all the inverted commas, apostrophes, and dots...... which did not show in the preview. Lisa - I know nothing about why there weren't more Aussie hybrids available for sale. Probably distance to get them there would have been a hindrance. Shane Z was selling some of his hybrids, as was Peter T. I can only assume that due to restrictions on O.S. visitors' purchases, the sellers catered more for Aussies - the majority. Aww, I'm so sorry to learn that after just having lost Bud, you now find out that Elliott is very sick. About 20 years ago, my cousins were in a similar financial scenario with their dog, who had leukemia. So they took him to U. of Guelph Veterinary School to see if a more affordable option for treatment was available. They accepted her dog for treatment from students in Vet School and he got chemotherapy at a reduced cost, than they had been quoted, by any Vet clinics. I have no idea if U of Guelph still offers such an option, but perhaps you could check it out. Their dog went into remission and lived until he was 18, so they certainly felt that the treatment cost given them was well worth it for so many more years with their beloved pet. But they were told he had a good chance of recovery with chemotherapy, so it made the decision to treat him easier than if his life would have been prolonged for only a short time. I know that often people who can't afford to pay for their pet's medical treatment, feel forced to surrender their beloved pet to a Rescue centre or Humane Society. If the pet can be treated, it usually will be, so it's healthy for adoption. But I think that surrendering a pet is considered permanent, to avoid people scamming the system just to avoid paying the treatment cost, then returning to adopt their pet back out afterward. I can't find anything about this online, but can anyone confirm if this is correct? This is such a sad Catch-22 for people whose only reason for surrendering their pet is a prohibitive treatment cost, but they didn't just want to watch their pet's health deteriorate. Perhaps the centre fears if the pet fell ill again, it would just be re-surrendered again anyway. I hope that if whatever you are able to do, if assistance from the Go Fund Me, is not enough to pay for the treatment, that you will know it was the best you were able to do, and that you are giving Elliott the most love and comfort possible!! We're all thinking of you.

Roxsol....very good...especially on the cat Fob. I named him Favio, but called him Fav, and my husband started calling him Fob. The horse is Bane. One dog is named Mexican. He was given to me and named by a Mexican friend. My vet and the surgeon, anesthesiologist, etc have to get their schedules organized. She's pulling out all the stops for him, she wants "all hands on deck". So as soon as I know when Elliott is going in, you'll all know. She wants to clean the teeth as fast as possible, the one that was caked with tartar felt a little loose, so that will be pulled. They want to have him under as short a time as possible. Thanks for the hearts and good wishes! Chisue, my friend who owns Gino says that small dogs are prone to tartar, Gino certainly is, so I think cats are as well. Smudge and Bud both had dental cleanings and they ate both dry and wet food. With Smudge, they thought they had to remove his back tooth, but when they took the tartar off, the tooth was as good as new.

So happy he is doing well and I wish you luck getting pills down him. Maybe your vet has one of those "pill plungers" that she could give to you. Ask her about it. Or ask if the medication comes in a liquid form....easier to use with a medicine dropper.

What good news, Jasdip! Very glad he came through so well. It may take a few days for Elliott's mouth to heal enough for him to even test chewing anything. That was a lot of teeth! How many are left? (IDK how many teeth a cat has to begin with.)

Very happy to hear the good news. I have worked in rescue on and off and have cats myself and I’m always amazed at how normal they can seem while in excruciating pain. I’m so glad he will feel better. :)

He is so beautiful! Thank you for the update, and for taking such good care of him. One thing, if you decide to try baby food, make sure it's just the Gerbers meat only ones. The really gross looking pate ones. Lol. The others have ingredients that are bad for kitties. Onion, garlic, etc....💙

Likely mouth is still sore, esp. since cleaning and extractions performed. May take few days for eating to be painless.

Thanks for the tooth chart, mdln. Looks like El stil has plenty of teeth left, even minus ten of them.

I've survived without replacing one bottom molar. None of the scare stories resulted. (Upper molar growing too long; lopsided jaw; whatever.) Although I lost four teeth to now outdated orthodonture methods, three of my four wisdom teeth came through. (Spite, probably.)

I have a friend with a rescue cat that had to have almost all her teeth removed and she has done just fine. She even eats kibble but just swallows it.

My beloved Juliette lost her teeth at 15 and made out just fine to 19.5 years old. Your Elliott will enjoy his food and life much more now without pain as said by others.
