Do you have a school of veterinary medicine nearby? Their fees are often much less than private veterinarians and I've been incredibly impressed by the care at Univ of IL and Univ of Wisconsin Veterinary Teaching Hospitals.

Had a kitty with hematuria (blood in urine) from crystals when I adopted him; changed him to an all can food diet with some extra water (2 Tbsp) added. Completely resolved the problem with no further recurrences.

I’m so sorry. Pets are not always born or adoptyed into homes with love AND a fat bank account. I have spent thousandson vet bills and have also had to be realistic and pragmatic after spending $3,000 on a pet without even gettng a decent biosy or definitive diagnosis.

I bet Elliot can exist with a heart murmur as do many humans. There is a reasonable and humane ”gray” area between the two extremes.

My last beautiful kitty had hyperthyroidism, tehn took medication, then developed (forgot name, a common condition of flines taking the medication for hyperthyroidism. She lost weight, became light as a feather, I gave her subcutaneous Ringer’s solution infusions. Se became so weak, I fed her with an eyedropper and carried her to her litterbox and supported her. She died in my arms one early morning. She was going to be gone soon anyway.

Years earlier, I had taken another kitty to be eutehnized and was devastated when the vet first injected her with a medicine that was to make the finl injection work faster. But it had an emetic effect and made my dear beautiful kitty wrench with nausea. My husband and I were devastated. Convenient for the vet? A horrid passing for our fragile kitty. I regret doing that and it haunts me.

So I allowed my last two fading pets to be with me until they died in my arms. Cats often purr, even when ill.

Elliot looks fairly young. I think if you feed him a diet low in the problematic compound, insure that he gets ample fresh water and comfort & Let his teeth wait for now, he will improve. Perhaps mdln’s suggestions will be beneficial. A lot of our world is exhausted from Covid, wars, famine and strife. I don’t know anything about GoFundMe, but it might not be fruitful.

I ask animal lovers with thick wallets to reserve judgement on my approach. You can monitor Elliot. I dont imagine any feline cardiogram is going to address what UT bleeding he has. Give Elliot continued love and quiet and a safe, chaos free home. I will have both of you in my thoughts.

I am so sorry, it's just too much right now. If you can't afford it, you will need to let me go. I had to do that with my dog, it's so hard. (((Hugs)))

I also want to add this, jasdip. You've been through a lot these past couple of years. A lot of loss and heartache. Please remember that you must take care of yourself and not become overextended financially, emotionally and physically. Arms around you. There is no best decision, but I know will will find the best one for you and kitty.

He's so beautiful. I'm so sorry it's gone this way. Maybe you could contact a rescue and maybe they can give you some help knowing that you just rescued him yourself? I think the GoFundMe is also a good idea. You have a lot of friends here who may be able to help you out. That is a big chunk of money but maybe, like Sherry said, address one problem at a time. Especially if he doesn't seem to be in distress. Hugs and prayers for a good solution.

You have a hard decision to make, and I'm so sorry. I know what you are going through. It's a lot of money. Could you ask the vet if you can make payments?

I don't understand why a rescue would not help him and return him to YOU. He already HAS a rescue home! Can you contact some of these places? Failing that, isn't the best thing for Elliott to go to a rescue for medical care and be placed from there?

You've already saved his life by doing what you CAN do. Don't beat yourself up because you cannot afford to do more.

Elliot is a very sweet cat and to be so good at the vet's proves it. There are cat rescues I see on FB and many have set up Go Fund Me programs

for cats with medical problems. I hope you will be able to get some financial help so you can keep this sweet cat.

Oh what a difficult decision. There is actually a group in my area that provides financial help for pet owners. Could there be something similar in your area? Sending love to you and Elliot.

I'm so sorry for the bad news. Sometimes the rescues here help without surrendering the pet and hopefully there is one there that will also.

Jasdip, Our little mutt just saw the vet for shots and he has tooth problems. (Has had them since we adopted.) She recommended Perio Plus powder and Maxi Gard dental wipes. I think they are for both dog and cats. There is also a liquid to put in the water. I sent a message, but I don't know if it went through. If you want the water fountain, let me know. UPS said it would take 3 to 4 days to get there. It is a pain to use, because you have to clean often, but it does work.

Thank you for helping him. They may have fed, but are not keeping up with everything on the cats, because his mouth could not of got that bad unless it had been years.

Sherry, imagine my surprise when I got an email from my own name. I thought it was Spam! LOL. I'm not sure if the water fountain would work, he doesn't seem to drink water much at all. I always add warm water to his canned food, just to get more liquid into him. Bud and Roxie were both good at drinking water from the bowl. That's how I knew they didn't like the food in their dish, they'd sniff, leave it and go to the water bowl and drink.

Sherry, I hear you about the US/Cda conversion. A few years ago we had a GFM account for a couple of members here, and I wanted to make sure I sent $50. I struggled with the amount, I didn't want it to come thru as a wonky number like 41.34 or some such thing! LOL.

A short story…..3 years ago my daughter adopted a cat through a rescue. It was known at the time that Oliver had a heart murmur but had been front declawed and neutered through an earlier rescuer. Following up on a medical checkup, my daughter was told that Oliver had a really bad heart condition, Tetralogy of Fallot, and the cardiologist was stunned that he had survived anesthesia to be neutered and declawed. Oliver was not expected to live very long due to the severity of his heart issue. Here we are over 3 years later, Oliver is a having a very good, normal cat life.

Elliott has lots of aunties here.

Just in case this happens to someone else- I usually donate with my Discover card but it wouldn't work so I had to use my Visa. Apparently GoFundMe doesn't take Discover in Canada. I had to research to find out why my Discover card wouldn't work, no explanation was given at the site.

I donated to help your decision, based on what you are comfortable doing and not based on medical bills.

Medical decisions should not be based on the cost. You must decide what you want to do based on what is best for you. Not whether you can afford the cost.

best of luck... the biggest worry is the heart issue. our cat, male, had crystals as well. change of food - dry to wet- solved that very quickly. teeth, once cleaned, should clear up his gums. Hoping for a great outcome! keep us posted!

Can't having problems with his teeth affect his heart as well? In that case getting his mouth healthy again could help his heart. Come on, Elliott, you can do it!!!

Aww, I'm so sorry to learn that after just having lost Bud, you now find out that Elliott is very sick. About 20 years ago, my cousins were in a similar financial scenario with their dog, who had leukemia. So they took him to U. of Guelph Veterinary School to see if a more affordable option for treatment was available. They accepted her dog for treatment from students in Vet School and he got chemotherapy at a reduced cost, than they had been quoted, by any Vet clinics.

I have no idea if U of Guelph still offers such an option, but perhaps you could check it out. Their dog went into remission and lived until he was 18, so they certainly felt that the treatment cost given them was well worth it for so many more years with their beloved pet. But they were told he had a good chance of recovery with chemotherapy, so it made the decision to treat him easier than if his life would have been prolonged for only a short time.

I know that often people who can't afford to pay for their pet's medical treatment, feel forced to surrender their beloved pet to a Rescue centre or Humane Society. If the pet can be treated, it usually will be, so it's healthy for adoption. But I think that surrendering a pet is considered permanent, to avoid people scamming the system just to avoid paying the treatment cost, then returning to adopt their pet back out afterward. I can't find anything about this online, but can anyone confirm if this is correct?

This is such a sad Catch-22 for people whose only reason for surrendering their pet is a prohibitive treatment cost, but they didn't just want to watch their pet's health deteriorate. Perhaps the centre fears if the pet fell ill again, it would just be re-surrendered again anyway.

I hope that if whatever you are able to do, if assistance from the Go Fund Me, is not enough to pay for the treatment, that you will know it was the best you were able to do, and that you are giving Elliott the most love and comfort possible!! We're all thinking of you.

Darn. Now everyone will know I can't do simple math. ($1US = $1.25Canadian, not the other way around. Duh.) A little here, a little there, and let the tooth cleaning begin!
