Overweight cat consider diabetes, type 2. Significant contributing factor high carb dry food diet. Cats are obligate carnivores so digest protein better. In nature, cats eat mice, not corn & potatoes.

What sweet looking cats!

I have a big male cat who who tends to overweight. We have him on a high protein low carb cat food from the vet. He is unlikely to lose too much of it but he at least doesn't have diabetes so far. The vet says it is because he is fixed and not getting as much of the male hormones. I don't know.

I had one female cat who tended to overweight and food and kibbles from the vet kept her weight under control so we shall see about Nougat.

Aww, they are adorable. I love torties and have had about four in my life and the last one was also fat. Eliot looks like a Maine Coon. My MC, Bernie weighs 26 pounds so talk about giant cats. He's a sweetie. but none of them sleep with me.

What cuties! I do have a calico named Chloe and she's a sweetheart. She also chunked up after spaying. She was a feral, had a litter, and brought them to our yard.

They both look like big cats. One of my cats does that tap my face to get me to pet her. It is kind of funny that she has trained me to do that.

Yes, I like her Nicole, don't worry. I had her out on the balcony brushing her this morning. She likes going down with me to get the paper. I'm amazed that she can get around at all.

I believe Elliott is or at least part Maine-Coon. Smudge was, he had the furry feet and the tuft ears. Elliott has big feet. He stands 15" tall.

Trimming their nails is quite a feat! I have them partially done. Squirm and wriggle and everything else. Of course his feet are white, and furry and the nails are white, so it's hard to even see them.

You may not be sure how you feel about them, but they obviously like you! With cats that size, you must be dealing with a very full litter box.

Why do you not like calico cats ? I think they're beautiful and, ironically, the name of the last one we had was Chloe ! I sort of understand your aversion to calicoes, because I wouldn't want a yellow cat. I don't dislike yellow cats, they're just my least favorite.

There is not one color of cat I don't like. I love all cats. Tortoiseshells were a favorite and I had four including a mother and daughter. The mother I rescued when she was a homeless, pregnant almost dying cat. She lived to 19 and is one of my favs of all time. Her daughter Annie died a few years ago and was always fat. The other two torties were small. I have a ginger cat with green eyes now and she is precious and I always wanted a Maine coon never thinking I'd find one abandoned in an alley six years ago

My current and last cat were calicos. The one before them was a Maine Coon mix. Orange and fluffy with a fox like snout. Tufted toes and ears with a feather duster tail.

Jasdip, I agree with the others that Flossie has either diabetes and/or a thyroid problem. Our 15 year old cat has hyperthyroidism but not diabetes. He is on methimazole transdermal twice a day (there is no way in this lifetime that we could pill a cat). But our cat was not fat, actually he was too thin before his diagnosis. Both of our cats are considered "big" by today's standards - they weigh 18 lbs.

So while cats are generally hyperthyroid you just never know, Flossie could be hypothyroid. Here is hoping it is a thyroid issue and not diabetes that will require two shots a day with insulin. Hopefully her owner will have Flossie checked out.

Our Eskie was hypothyroid and loved to eat - anything. The pills were no problem for him. Even unflavoured it was food. Kind of scary though.

Very nice of you to babysit the cats. I guess it will help you decide whether to wait or get a cat sooner than later. A new cat won't replace Bud but will be different in his/her own way.
