Did I screw up my bathroom brass colors??

I’m doing a Reno of the main bathroom. The vanity is navy with brass handles. I ordered chrome faucets but brass medicine chest and brass sconces to match the brass handles on vanity. I finally opened the box of the medicine chest and the gold is so much brighter than the sconce that will be above it. I cannot return the medicine chest since it was a special order. Can I ignore it? Should I try to find different sconces? My contractor is starting finally after a 9 month wait. Ugh

Hi @mjammjam! Is that a Robern medicine cabinet? It looks like the Robern gold color. I was supposed to use 2 of them in my master, but managed to see a sample display mirror in person, in time to change the order. It is such a weird gold and goes with nothing! I changed my order to chrome, even though everything else in the bathroom is "gold". I figured the chrome border would just blend into the mirror. Unfortunately this style med cabinet didn't have the option of just the plain beveled mirror, which would have been my first choice.

You could also use rub-n-buff type stuff to dull down the gold a bit. That is what I would have done if I hadn't been able to change my order. Gold color of the faucet, sconces and pendant are all slightly different but not "yellow fake gold" like the Robern color.

Here is the bathroom. The med cabs are 24" W x 48" H.

Can you please include images of all your fixtures including the vanity and sconce on a powerpoint slide side by side and save as a picture in one image. This will provide a better visual so that we can make a comparison. Personally, it is nice to not always have everything match exactly, but I would need to see what else you have to work with especially when it comes to colours and/or tones of a colour. I want to take the guesswork out and pictures speak volumes. Thanks.

I am sorry to hear you are not happy with this and that it was not made clear to you in advance there would be this height difference. We've also had leveling issues with our house during out remodel last year and had to make some compromises that I did not like and then we had an issue where grout keeps popping out and some broken stone tiles in our entryway because the tile installer cheated one end of the mud bed so we wouldn't have a 2-3" step like yours. So as you can see the other solution would've had a different set of problems..... What is annoying is when these contractors make these decisions for us without consulting us and any fix would be difficult and costly. My "fix" would be to demo the stone floor and either do porcelain or hardwood, neither is acceptable to me so I live with this one section where the grout pops out and make sure no one brings in heavy stuff on my entry floor. I agree, it may be a good idea to take a little break while you absorb this new development, let your contractor know you are disappointed this was not communicated to you ahead of time and ask if there are any other solutions... I would try to get Bill Vincent's (or Mongo's) opinion on this as well. He often frequents the bathroom forum as does a couple other tile installers who can advise you if this is a good install or not or perhaps suggest another option you've not thought of, though of the two solutions mentioned, a step sounds better than a short ramp.

Thanks, SJ. Yellow has never been one of my favorite colors and there is a lot of it on the wall. I was considering the multi-yellow though, but now that I've learned it's been discontinued, I think I will go with the light blue. Thanks for the mock ups, ilikefriday!

I am using Custom Flex Bond LFT, that complies with ANSI 118.11 as per Schutler instructions, over plywood subfloor. I have called my plumber, who does tile already... looking at 2-3 months time haha The previous floor was leaking water downstairs, so I braved to remove and fix myself. Thank you. The guy at the plumbing supply store said that too, that in his experience, you want the water to hit on the back side of the drain in a bathroom sink. If it hits the drain directly, the splash will be much worse. I think because in the This Old House video the guy makes a point of saying that the faucet water lines up with the drain that I thought something was off. Still, it does splash up to the handles more than I'd like, and the pressure is weak, but I guess that is a function of "new" faucets, idk. This was the third sort-of blunder (except this really isn't one?) I've made as a new home owner, so I've just gotten...frustrated. There's another YouTube video where a man replaces a sink with the Kohler Archer drop-in and uses an American Standard Chatfield faucet, and it's about an inch back of the drain.

I’ve noticed people rarely match brass. Having said that, if you find it looks weird because of how close in proximity all the diff brass is then it’s probably easier to swap the sconces than the medicine cabinet or vanity

No one will notice the differences. I have several brass lighting fixtures throughout my house and even in the same hallway and they don't "match" but work together.

Heck I have chrome in my upstairs guest bath except the shower head which was free from my sister is nickel. No one in 3 years has noticed.

I know it’s not the worst thing in the world, but here they are side by side. The medicine cabinet will be recessed so you’ll only see 1/4” border around the front of the mirror when looking head-on

it's close enough. the medicine cab doesn't have a super thick trim, so it should be fine together.

do the faucets match the sconce color?

The mirror stays So find wall sconces that mix both brass and chrome in the trim.

Judy Dunn - I've been out all day trying to find the sconce you talk about, but I can't find anything with that color gold I'm thinking of leaving it - I'm so mad at myself, for not thinking about that till now. I've had the medicine cabinet in the house for 9 months waiting for the contractor to fit me in. I wouldn't have been able to cancel it anyway since it's a special order supposedly. The sconces aren't easy to find in this color gold. I wonder if I should buy vanity hardware in bright gold to pull it together or just ignore it all and move! HAHA

My master bath has chrome faucets and aged brass for door handles, etc.

I second the idea for rub and buff or whatever it’s called. You can Google what tones down a metal finish, obviously try it in an inconspicuous spot first. Also, don’t think it will be too noticeable either! Show pics when done!

I love both your sconces and your cabinet. I have a similar sconce in a half bath with a gold mirror and brass shelf.
