Kitchen Backsplash -- Vinyl Schluter trim not flush with subway tile

Been doing practice runs with my materials to make sure I like it all before trying DIY tiling for the first time.

When using the Schluter trim, it juts out about 1/8" from the tile, coming forward.

The pictures I see online look like the trim is flush. Do I need to build up the tile with the mastic? The trial runs I did adhered completely, but they were not super thick.

Not sure if you can tell, but the trim is forward of the tile.

Also, I was practicing with all kinds of sample tiles and different spacing, so don't think that this was my final choice, lol.

Using thinset, with a 3/8” trowel will build it out to the depth of the jolly.

Are you using two different tiles?

No, not using two tiles. I was just messing around learning to use the materials and didn't want to waste my tiles so I was using samples. My tile is the one on top that abuts the Schluter. That makes sense about the trowel -- I was using a 3/16". Duh.

Boyfriend's brother, a professional tiler, just said that he never uses the irregular ceramic tiles, nor the Schluters because they are both a nightmare to work with, but I've seen other DIY'ers say the opposite regarding the tiles -- that they are very forgiving because of the inherent irregularity. Any opinions on that?

(I'm pretty scared to start this project, if you can't tell ;-)

I am going to take pictures and upload them later today - headed over there right now - but my builder is suggesting using the 3x6 bullnose on the long edge and running it perpendicular. I know that is how this is usually done in a bathroom but what about a backsplash? Our counters are L shaped with the fridge at one end so this is only an issue at one end (the open one). The other option would be to use another one of their options for trimming it out on the end, like a molding of some sort, but I don't know that they would have one that would work. Any thoughts? Do people usually just run one edge of perpendicular bullnose? I guess theoretically that could be cut down to a super skinny bullnose but that may look even worse. Or a pencil liner???? So we finally decided and the tile went up earlier this week. We are living about 40 minutes away from the house right now, I stopped by the house last evening. We ended up using the suggestion of taping up paper with pictures of the tile - thank you for that suggestion!!! I tried to do photoshop, but I wasn't doing a great job. Seeing it in person helped. We ended up tiling the area above the range and then the 18 inch area between the uppers and counter. In the open shelf area the 18 inches below the lowest shelf are tile, but then above the shelves is paint. Sorry for the poor quality cell phone pictures. It was dusk and the electricity wasn't on. I was also holding my 1 year old at the time.

Subway tile backsplash edge?

The first time we had the bullnose because the design was more traditional. This time the design is more modern so we went with the Schluter, Our tile was Daltile and the finished edge tile was much more of a subtle bullnose than nhbaskets. The edge was just gentley rounded rather than the straight edge on the regular tile. However, this was over 5 years ago, so not sure if they still make it.

Daina L, there is a Cancos store in NJ - 7 Elkins Road East Brunswick, NJ 08816. If you're not too far I would stop by. You seem to be settling on a tile. I thought I had picked the perfect tile and while waiting for a price I kept looking. Then I found the tile I used. There was no doubt in mind that I found it - both price and color. It's very frustrating - I remember making choices throughout the remodel, thinking I just got over the hardest, to then face another "hardest". But it does come together. I'm sure your kitchen will look great and you will love it. Please keep us posted.

Not to be a dick, so I apologize if this comes across that way. But if you’re scared to start this project, you’ve never tiled before - hire a tile pro. Irregular tiles can be a challenge. You can’t just slap a spacer in and carry on. It invokes some atristry and hand adjusting to get your grout joint consistent. Jollys I don’t find particularly challenging to work with.

No offense taken at all, and I really appreciate your help. :-) I'm thinking everyone had a first tiling job, right? And they were probably nervous, right? There's no rush, so I'm taking it slowly and practicing until I like the results. Thanks again for the advice and the speed with which you shared it :-).
