You need an overhead vent. Its the only option that actually works.

Why would Kitchenaid’s ventilation pairing chart show both models as compatible if they are indeed not?

I am planning on contacting KA on Monday to see what they say. This is for a remote cabin and I had a limited choice where to purchase appliances. Basically only drop ship is available up there.

While I’m not the biggest fan of a downdraft vent, it will suit our needs just fine. I’ve had a one in my current kitchen for over 20 years with no complaints.

I really just need install info if anyone has dealt with the same issue. Thanks!

The Kitchenaid KSGG700ESS returned mediocre scores (57 out of 100) in Consumer Reports testing. You may wish to choose something else.

The Best D49M30SB Cattura advertises that it can be used with a wide variety of appliances:

"Realize design aspirations utilizing your favorite cooking appliances. For the first time, a downdraft can be installed with a free-standing range, gas or electric cooktop, rangetop, slide-in range or a built-in oven with a cooktop"

There is no evidence from the Kitchenaid hood's Dimensions Guide that it can be installed other than within the cooktop cabinet.

I appreciate the reply, but am only looking for install advice on both Kitchenaid appliances. Long story, but have the Kitchenaid appliances purchased and ready to go. I did get warranties on both.

Specifically, I’m curious how the downdraft is positioned behind the slide-in range. KA has a ventiation pairings chart that shows compatibility, but their install guide looks to only refer to cooktop, not range use. Hoping someone has had experince using these together.

Per @wdccruise, your downdraft can only be installed with a cooktop. That is the bottom line. It's like saying "I have these tires for my Toyota Camry, please respond with your experience using these tires on the Ford F-150". Something will have to change in your appliances - you will have to bite the bullet and buy something different, and perhaps sell the incompatible downdraft on Craig's List or give to charity for a tax deduction.

As shown on page 6 of the Owners Manual, an interior-mounted blower would normally be attached to the front of the hood and extend underneath the cooktop. Since a range would prevent this*, it appears that the blower would have to be moved to the rear of the hood (i.e., "reversed) and require 10" behind the hood for the blower. However with the blower reversed, 5-1/4" would still be required at the front of the hood; it's not clear how the range wouldn't force the hood to be installed far behind the range.*

With an exterior-mounted vent motor (page 17) it would appear that duct would have to be attached horizontally to the rear of the hood. A range would block a duct attached to the front of the hood.*

The ONLY physical option that works with a 24” deep cabinet installation is an overhead hood. Even the Cattura, which has a reversable plenum, will NOT work with a range in a 24” deep counter scenario.

The separate and pretty big design issue here is why on earth an island cooking zone has a burn hazard skinny unsafe single cabinet depth installation? Who designed the need to visit the burn ward?

The fact than any downdraft is 95% less effective than an overhead hood is a a separate reason that they are an ineffctive, useless, and expensive choice. They are a con job and tgeconky peopke who think they work are people who do not really cook, or are predisposed to confirmation bias because of the sunk cost fallacy.

Install an overhead vent. And at least extend the counter behind the range another 12-15”.

The Pairing Guide does say the hood is compatible with KA ranges. It remains a mystery how to do it.

Yes, why in the world would the pairing chart state they are compatible if there is no way to install? This is what I’ve been clinging to. Super frustrating!

I should also mention that this is not on an island and clearly no design was involved.

We’ve recently purchased a cabin and were just replacing the range out. There was no existing ventilation in place at all. I’m just now understanding why!
