What greeted me today

I've got buds and scapes galore so I know there will be lots of blooms soon. Today some of them began to open:

It was cloudy and drizzly yesterday when I saw the buds begin to open so feared the worse on splotched blooms, but it wasn't too bad. Pretty good for a first of the season flowering too-triplets:

Roman Steel:

This was supposed to be Rudy, a red UF that I really like but have a hard time keeping alive. This is not red obviously, but is a yellow unregistered sibling known as Rudy's Sister. Same symmetrical blooms, same retention of color and same turgid unflinching petals. The color just shouts at me:

The last one I'll show is one I saw at the nursery and it spoke to me. I wish my camera could pick up the nice cantalope/orange base color. Between it and the dark maroon eye/edge it really stood out amongst all the other ones on display:

Maryl: Roman Steel is so pretty with the color. And those teeth...wow. What is the pink flowers behind it? I do like your 'not' Ruby but Ruby Sister. Nice green throat on it.

What a lovely trio of Roman Steel, lovely clear color, nice edge and opened nicely. I like Ruby's Sister too. Cactus Jack has a nice big eye.

Hello and thanks so much everyone! I wish there was this much enthusiasm among the people that can see it for real at my home. I will try my best with all this pain to address all of you:-) Stush: I am not sure. I never expected it that big. It is still in flower today! I am glad it is not one of those that flower for one day and then die. Yes, now my heel is killing me along with the mouth because I can't take Ibuprofen and pain killers make me sick. ROFLMBO! Mike they are just beautiful, but i'm laughing at what Josh wrote. Yes, it is the same plant Josh, and we talked about it not too long ago, but i'm not sure I wrote the name down, so I'll look a little later. ;-) It's in a thread somewhere here . lol... Mike, That is beautiful!!! I was wondering about it just the other day! They smell sweet too! Mine has one new little bud forming now. I thought she'd be done for the season, but guess not. And mine has only bloomed one flower at a time! Now I'm jealous! ;-) Any bee's in them? It would be nice to get seeds, I never have. And how is your Rainbow hedgehog? Bloomed yet? Oh, the neo...went out this morning to check -- all spikes have open flowers on them. Sorry... Neos have very distinct looking spikes - not looking like a growth at all...Coming out from between the bottom leaves, and similar to any vandaceous spike...Hope this helps, and good luck with your neo :) Olya

Roman Steel is just gorgeous - wonderful color, form and edge! Best of luck with Rudy's Sister! So did you buy Cactus Jack? I like how big the eye is!

Love that triple bloom, such a nice daylily. i know what you mean about capturing those peachy/cantelope colors, I struggle eith that too. What a lovely yellow bloom, registered or not, a keeper.

I agree-that photo of Roman Steel is a stunner! And you know how I feel about yellow so really like Rudy’s Sister.

Julia: The pink flower is Lythrum: cultivar 'Morden's Pink'. Now almost totally banned from commerce in the US because the species Lythrum invades the wetlands in Minnesota and other northern states. This is not the species nor the wetlands and has never spread in the 30 + years I've grown it....Nancy/Debra: RE: Cactus Jack. I don't usually like eyed daylilies, but as you all noted the extra large size of the eye, along with the matching dark edge and cantaloupe base color, shouted "buy me" and, on impulse, I did just that. Once I got it home I found out it's an evergreen, so we will see if it survives my winters (or my hot summers in the sun)...........Sherry: It does get a little maddening when your eye can see a glorious color but the camera can't capture it. Happens to the best of us unfortunately.......Kate: Rudy's Sister just glows. You know I'm not much for UF's and greeny/lemon yellow is not my usual favorite shade, but the hybridizer and I agree that I will continue to grow Rudy's Sister to see if she's worth introduction. She did so well in 92 degree heat, with no loss of color or petal substance (like Rudy which also did well in the heat) that I'm hoping she will continue to improve. A sunfast/colorfast daylily is always interesting for we heat sufferers............Maryl

Roman Steel: is my kind of bloom,. Sherry and three makes it even better. My camera sometimes has issues with orangy colors too, That has to be a beauty when you can see the actual color since it is a beauty with the color that shows. I am so glad your season is beginning. Ruby's Sister is beautiful too.

Thanks Kay. The weather was in the low 80's when I saw Cactus Jack, so the pretty cantaloupe base color I liked so much may fade to off white as the heat goes up. We will see...... Roman Steel seems to be a good plant as well as having pretty blooms. If so, it will be my first successful Pierce................Maryl
