don't paint the window trim black, just the sashes and muntins. you either have the trim done black in your photos, or its not shown at all. in 20 years, your farmhouse and black windows will be described on houzz as 'ugly dated', as in 'we're thinking of buying this ugly dated farmhouse, what can we do to update it?" being able to paint anything that is black, another color, will be tremendously useful at that time.

Nshepp, I originally was going with solar shades in the open concept space, but ended up having 3m film applied on those windows and doors. This would protect floors and furniture, as well as, heat in the summer months. You can’t see in during the day, but with lights on at night you can. But we have a lot of privacy anyway. I did go with dark charcoal shades in the bedrooms. I have been very happy with my decision.

A few months ago I got a call from a contractor who was having trouble with a customer. He explained he was at wits end with them and asked me (as a favor) to come help. I showed up to a very angry pair: both the customer and contractor. The customer had bought a large Silverline window somewhere and hired the contractor to install it. The contractor was not experienced in installing windows of this caliber and was really having a tough time. He had cut his teeth installing Marvin and Hayfield windows. The Silverline was a lot more difficult to install due to the flimsy materials. He had the vertical rails twisted and when I placed a 4' level against the rail the waves were easily visible. I spent some time explaining to the homeowner that the poor quality of window made it difficult to install correctly, then spent time with the contractor to show him how to overcome these downfalls. It worked out fine in the end and everybody left paid and happy. The window is going to perform pretty well over it's life, and it is certainly better than what he had before. So, is Silverline a bad choice all the time? No, but usually it is. A better quality unit is more forgiving to the installer, and the parts will last longer. Usually the air sealing is better as well. I like the Andersen 100 series windows. They are priced correctly for what they are, and they perform well. Easy to install as well. If you are looking for a good comparison, look for a Marvin Essential. I like them a little better, but it's really close. Best of Luck

Here is my mock-up with two over one. I did one with the existing trim in red for clarity. It is almost non-existent. I see now you are going to add to the trim. The top of the bottom windows will have to be replaced too, because they are not wide enough. I agree with you that the trim should be white. The black seems heavy handed. Second picture with two black trim on the top left and two with white on the right. Lower level shows one of each. The trim I used was not wide. One other issue is what is the center window going to look like in black? Can you do a trim there?
