black windows. black vs white trim?
Hi everyone, we’re in the process of getting black exterior windows. My husband hates the current shutters and we will be removing them. My question is about the trim. He wants black but I’m afraid black will be so heavy. I want white but I am a little fearful of it looking too bare.
First pic is our house, second is black windows with white trim and then black windows with black trim.
Also, regarding grids. He hates the traditional colonial 6 over 6 or 6 over 1. He prefers 2 over 1. (I feel like if we go with white trim as I want, I need to give him the grids…lol)
If anyone can show me what my house would like with each trim, I’d appreciate it!

2 years agoThanks, it’s the casement around the windows. I guess that’s to go over the siding. I was thinking white to blend in. But my husband likes black. This is my neighbors house with the casement and while I like it in white, I think it’ll look too think one black. What do you think?

Comments (12)I hate muntins (grids) on windows. A lot also depends on what the exterior looks like. Does the house need grids or is more of a modern style? Here are a few images of what the floor length windows can look like (I would do none) . is white /black the only choice? what about tan or gray windows? what if you did wood interior, vinyl exterior? that way you can paint the inside. for the floor length windows, or the really nice view windows, I might spend a bit more and get better quality. personally I like these following two windows and styles.... Comments (16)I would do black trim. What would be the point of white? It would stick out like a sore thumb against the black and negate the whole disappearing walls effect. And for those who advocate neutral walls, black is pretty neutral. :) ETA: Don't forget that your floors are light and will provide contrast. If you add contrast on the walls as well, it might make the wallpaper stand out in a way you don't want. Here are some pictures I found of both. It may help you decide which effect you prefer. Comments (5)In combination with black doors, this can become over kill in a big hurry. The light.........and the too heavy below. Sorry....... the first THREE look great, the last???? Not for me. 2 years agoHere is my mock-up with two over one. I did one with the existing trim in red for clarity. It is almost non-existent. I see now you are going to add to the trim. The top of the bottom windows will have to be replaced too, because they are not wide enough.
I agree with you that the trim should be white. The black seems heavy handed. Second picture with two black trim on the top left and two with white on the right. Lower level shows one of each. The trim I used was not wide.
One other issue is what is the center window going to look like in black? Can you do a trim there?
