I've been ripping out plants!
Comments (15)As a newbie, it's this kind of chaos that I'm aiming for. They're beautiful. Tiffy, I could not bear to rip out my lilies and I found the beetles were more aggressive than usual, but then I did not do my usual treatment which I got from the horticultural college here in town: just when the lily buds start pushing their heads through the earth in Spring, spray them and the surrounding earth with a 10% solution of household ammonia. It does not hurt the plants, but seems to kill of the beetle eggs/larvae. I have done this over the last several years and had only a few beetles, but didn't this year because I was too busy with WS and I had quite an infestation. However, I saved all my lilies- they have always been my favourite flower. Strangely enough, I had none in my front flower-bed where I have a collection of "Infiity" the so-called green lily, nor in my new bed against the western fence where I have all my trumpets and 4-5 footers (removed from the front). I guess they haven't found them yet!!!...See MoreI gave up and ripped it out...
Comments (9)GGG -- sometimes we just have to rip stuff out. I've got some candidates on my list. You've got me concerned about yellow crocosmia as I desperately need some tall yellow (deer proof) blooms in my garden. I'm going to Plant Delights Nursery for their open house. First trip for me and the only thing that I thought I'd buy is yellow crocosmia 'Jenny Bloom'! I just went around on my morning stroll with my camera. I feel like I've run out of material! Everything is the same old thing that I've been posting --- coneflowers, monarda, agastache, echinops, petunias, phlox, perennial heliotrope, salvia. My 'Lucifer' crocosmia and 'Starfighter' lily are the only new blooms. Cameron...See MoreEndless Summers of no blooms...I have hydrangea-cidal tendencies!
Comments (6):-) LOL...I love that, it will be my new name for them now! Thanks for the comment, I feel better knowing it's not just me. I can get most kinds of plants to perform, even some fairly fussy roses, but these guys baffle me, no discernable rhyme or reason I could figure out as to why they bloomed some or not at all. They were giving me a gardening confidence crisis... I even sort-of did winter protect them last year with some soil (I was winter protecting some first year roses and had a bit of dirt left over). So at least I would have thought they'd improve, relative to other years. And they didn't have the stress of die-back after they'd broken dormancy as far as I know. Maybe they just don't like our la Nina years, or I looked at them wrong. No idea... I think that, rather than commit hydrangeacide quite yet, in spring I'll move the one in the back to a new location that is more of an North-western side location, not quite as much sun and a little wetter. That spot isn't so great for roses anyway, and the hydrangea foliage should at least not be stressed for water or fried in the sun there. They are pretty foliage plants, when they aren't in places where I'm constantly eying their spot and thinking how many flowers I'd have if I had a rose there instead... Thanks again!...See MoreWhat should I expect when they rip out my old countertops?
Comments (9)HI raee_gw, yes, they said it's supposed to be gentle removal. They will take the sinks and faucets back to their factory so all major cutting is done away from my home. If they need to make some slight adjustments on site, they will do it outside on my driveway. I do have a lot of bottom drawers - I think I should cover them with something - maybe plastic wrap so no dust gets in he runners or drawers. Thanks. wags4fun - wow, that Sea Pearl quartzite is stunning - I hope you are thrilled with them once they are in place. Please post photos when they are done, I love to see gorgeous quartzites . And yes, good idea to remove the top drawers. I've been told that they measure and then go back to the shop and make my counters - then they come back to install and the plumber comes the next day. They told me they can't template the backsplash until the counter top is in, so that they come back a few days later to install. BTW, I love your name - you must have some happy dogs in your house? My3dogs - LOL, I'm glad you posted about your beadboard - I think I'll borrow that idea for the family bathroom which is next on my list. Thanks all for the positive vibes.....I'm hopeful it will all go smoothly....See MoreChristopher CNC
